2 BMWs later and I still miss my E90 M3. Wish I still had it for weekend and track use but after 7 years I needed a more comfortable daily driver. That engine was amazing.

I have one and it still amazing to see how quickly the engine spins up.

Like most things there is another side to this story. Do you really like revving these modern turbocharged engines? You have lots of low end torque, yes, and it's not particularly rewarding to rev them high ... and the sound or rather lack thereof.

My M2C handles nicely and is fun to drive but I don't feel much like revving it, there's plenty of low end torque so there is not much to get from revving it high - and it sounds awful anyway. On the other hand my E61 M5 is heavy and bulky (not like the M2C is a feather-weight) but God do I love revving it, the punch you get over 5000 RPM and that sound ... it's the reason I cannot sell it.

I am aware that this doesn't always work. I was looking into a (981) Cayman GT4 but I had my doubts regarding the tall gearing but again I would not suggest to 'remedy' that by slapping turbochargers on it.

Yes, again, for reasons I already stated, I don't want to be doing >100kmph in 2nd because I want to actually feel something from my car. Like I said, if that's what you're into, and have a track nearby or loose policing where you live, great. For me, and where I live, looking too hard at the accelerator will get you a ticket so the S65 was just out of the question. But believe me I tried.

On your M2, your issue is the S55. It will never sound good. The N55 on the other hand sounded really good.

Put a CS map or a BM3 Stage 1 map on your M2 and you will find some reasons to rev it to redline. And start tracking it, it’s the other purpose in that “dual purpose” car.

For perspective, I’ve owned my E90 for 6 years, and I’ve accumulated 5 years so far across two F80s, I guess you could say they made a similar impact on me for the time. But I’d never go back to an E90 now, ever.

If anything, I’d go for an E46 M3, and not to replace the F80 but in addition to it.

Wrong big time about the E90. Did you even drive one and see how it feels?
I've owned every 3 series but the E21 and the F30. But i've driven these also. How about you?

Been reading, lurking, and reading some more. I've come to the realization that the e9x M3 was the last M that people generally were highly passionate about. Don't see it that much from the latest gen. I may stand corrected after the latest gen is gone for a few years.

So, I'm thinking that maybe the M2 will take the crown as the BMW M to have. It's a fun little car to toss around. I remember when we used to say that about the M3. Now it's just bulky and showy.

The S65 is one of the best singers in the old ///M opera! Make sure to give it a nice microphone...
