The upcoming SVJ ultra-performance variant beat Porsche’s GT2 RS by two seconds!
When it comes to the ultimate test of performance, a lap time at the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife continues to be automakers’ preferred way to show dominance. For almost a year, Porsche has held the record for fastest production car around the ’Ring with its 911 GT2 RS. Now Lamborghini has toppled Porsche and established a new benchmark with the upcoming Aventador SVJ.

With Lamborghini factory driver Marco Mapelli at the wheel, the camouflaged Aventador SVJ—the higher-output lightweight version of Lamborghini’s V-12–powered supercar—rocketed around the Nordschleife in a mind-boggling 6:44.97. That’s some two seconds faster than the Porsche’s 6:47.3 and close to seven seconds faster than the smaller Huracán Performante, which held the record before the GT2 RS.

The Aventador SVJ features a higher power output compared to the 740-hp Aventador SV. It also features lightweight materials and Lamborghini’s ALA 2.0 active aero system, which has been featured on the Huracan Performante. While the SVJ comes standard with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, the record-setting car wore optional P Zero Trofeo R rubber.

The SVJ has taken its place as the king of the ’Ring before it has even been fully unveiled. Lamborghini is set to officially reveal the car during Monterey Car Week in August.

Stomp seems a little strong for 0.26%, but yeah, for the moment, it's faster.

Try and downplay all you like. 2.33 Seconds is significant!

Only a minute and a half to go...

Oh that's right, they don't actually build race cars. In all honesty, that massively impressive for that sled, the Huracan appeared to have the upper hand between the two, so good on them for finally making their comically expensive car a touch faster than the much cheaper one.

So... I guess the point where this stop mattering to average drivers and even experienced track addicts was around the low 8 minute range I suppose lol.

So we only have another 1.5 minute to waste... basically performance that will never be used on the streets or even on any track.

Does anybody know what tires the GT2 used? The Lambo used P zero trofeo R. It's got to account for something. Great driving nonetheless.

Porsche used cup 2 R tires for the record run. Most other test of the GT2 RS were conducted using sport cup 2 and there definitely is a huge difference. The McLaren 720s has handedly beaten the the GT2 RS when on the cup 2 tires. The gt2 RS is all about the tires.

While watching the video, 2 things came to mind.

Firstly, I now have even more respect for the GT2RS, as I think the Aventador is in a much higher class.

Secondly, that driver know his stuff, there were several moments where I thought he was going to lose it.

All in all, a very nice clip. That sound is absolutely awesome.

Superior chassis is a superior chassis. Porsche has to work extra hard to make the rear wheel drive chassis as fast as a good mid-engine, and every trick they come up with is eventually adopted by everyone else, so it's always somewhat of a losing battle for ultimate speed. Doesn't mean they can't make something that comes out on top, but from an engineering effort perspective, it's harder.

Pretty amazing times for the auto really, the advances seem to be measured in weeks now and not years.

Isn't this car all-wheel drive?? That's easily where the very small time difference comes from. Great lap..

I don’t think this counts as a production car due to the full roll cage in the Lambo. The GT2 does not have a full cage.

They all mess with numbers. An f90 M5 is 600hp, 4300lbs and runs a 10.9 quarter mile. 600 hp. Sure, BMW.

The math on the above nets you 600hp flywheel and 540 to the ground.....

You claim it's higher or lower hp?

These cars are 600hp and tq, at the wheels. They are also max torque at low RPMs. Massive difference. Looking at something like a GT350 where you'd think the hp/weight would favor the mustang, you'd be wrong, because it's way down on torque at rpm, way down on hp at the wheels, and AWD will blast through lower speeds. BMW never claimed SAE at the crankshaft.

Yeah, horsepower #s on a dyno mean nothing to me. A dyno is only a tuning tool perse.

The math with the M5 trapping in a 1/4 at 10.9 @ 4300lbs is an undeniable 600hp crank and 540 to the ground.

Regardless of torque, it falls too quickly to be a substantial difference unlike diesels that can sustain torque which is why they have more "usable" horsepower/ torque and can outrun BMWs on the 1/4.
