How much additional oil/coolant with DO88 oil cooler/radiator?
Bought the D088 radiator/oil cooler! How much additional oil is required for the oil cooler and how much additional coolant for the upgraded radiator?

I installed the D088 radiator last night and tried to figure this out for you. It was a lot harder/messier to measure a radiator's capacity than I thought.
For my test, I plugged the lower radiator pipe and, starting with a full gallon of water/coolant, I filled the radiator from the top pipe until it overflowed. This is what was left in the gallon container after filling. Water = D088; coolant = OEM radiator. So the D088 radiator took maybe 3/4 gallon while the OEM radiator only took 1/2 gallon...roughly...it was a mess. |

with the bigger oil cooler I think my car takes like 11qts of oil now from an oil change.

Thank you for that! So roughly 1/4 gallon more of coolant to be added. Have you installed the DO88 oil cooler as well? Trying to figure out how much more oil to add.

In my previous experience with RX-7's, which use a similar kind of oil cooler, there would be around 2 quarts or so that would hang out in the oil cooler and lines after draining the engine for an oil change. It would take 4.5 quarts for a regular oil change, and around 6.5 if the engine and oil cooler were both empty. With this cars electronic dipstick, the actual procedure of putting a larger cooler seemed really scary, as you have to wait for the car to be completely warm for it to tell you that you are low on oil, and subsequently have no idea how much extra to add the first time. With the rx7, you could just pull the EFI fuse and crank the engine to build oil pressure and fill the oil cooler, then re-check with the dipsick. Rinse and repeat until the oil level is ok, then put the fuse back in and fire the engine off. With the S65's electronic dipstick the fact it has to wait until its warm to tell you its critically low on oil always seemed completely insane to me. |

Unless he is somehow emptying the oil cooler or letting it drain for hours, I don't see how 11qts would go in. Mine takes under 10 for sure with the do88 oil cooler, forgot exactly how much.

Did another car yesterday, rod bearings were changed, I noticed it already had a d088 oil cooler installed.
With the pan off and drained/cleaned, to the top mark on the oil level it took less than 10L, closer to 9.5L. |

Altho, I do expect more to drain when doing a rb job vs regular oil change so I'm a little surprised it takes that much, but not enough difference to worry about.
