I park in a 10-level parking garage downtown for work. Some ground rules have developed over time:

- Spaces get noticeably wider on floors 8-10, so I go all the way up there, even if there's some room on lower floors.
- I always park in an interior row away from the edges of the structure. I've found that those who park on edges don't park nearly as well as those who don't (Odd, this. Not sure how to explain it.). This is also where the 'Compact' spaces tend to be, even if they're not marked as such (and no one pays attention to that anyway, right?)
- I almost never, EVER park on the left side of a coupe, no matter how nice it is. Longer, wider, heavier doors can wreak havoc on my passenger side bodywork.
- I currently drive a Cayman. A group of four cars typically gets to work at roughly the same time: mine, a C7 'vette, a 2017 Miata, and a launch-edition Alfa Giulia QV. We routinely park next to each other when possible because the pride is assumed and respected. I've only seen the Miata owner, and never talked to any of them.

i forgot another pro-tip. with the growing popularity of back-in parking (are these all bimmerpost members who don't want to crack their front spoilers? that's a topic for another thread), it's become easier to find parking spots where you have someone's passenger door on both sides of your car. those spots are to be coveted, because there's a good chance that no one will open the passenger doors on either vehicle beside you (especially if it's office parking). the chances of someone opening the driver's door, however, is 100%.

Good call, except never park next to a 4-door. Damn kids!

My father did that to a co-worker who bought a new car and parked in the middle of nowhere. He would get so close to his driver's door that he couldn't get into the car. This went on for a couple weeks until one morning the co-worker was hiding in the bushes to see who the asshole was. They knew each other at work, but he did not know what kind of car my father drove (large company). I'm told he cracked up when he realized it was my father (who was known for joking around).

At my work, there is a small 2 level parking garage, which I prefer to park even though it's a long walk in (lots of closer spaces in the open blacktop parking lot). The parking garage keeps the car in the shade (no UV), keeps it dry when there is an occasional shower (rain/snow), reduces the pollen (which is getting bad now). I have a single spot on the lowest level that is adjacent to a big post/beam and the other space is at a 45 degree angle (so if two cars were parked, they would only meet at the front bumpers). I've never come out to a find another car parked next to me, and even if there was it would be impossible to get a door ding.

I go to work early so I can get the first spot at the end of the row and park at a slight angle to give the next car a little more room.

Shhhh.

Do not spread the word about why you park end space and furthest away from the shop's entrance.

Others will cotton on and take *my* space.

What gives, though, when there are literally tens of parking spaces free all around where I've parked, that a lone driver pulls up in the space next to me and can't open their own door fully to get out the vehicle. *Any* other space, and I literally mean *any* space within 20 yards they could've parked such that they could throw their driver's door open with absolute abandon without being close to any other vehicle. But no. NO. They make it difficult for themselves to get out without causing damage. Why is this? Are they doing it on purpose, or are they utterly devoid of any situational awareness?

I just find it difficult to fathom this behaviour...

Yours Aye

It's that damn pack mentality. Just like when you're driving and the roadway is wide open in front of the three morons that insist on driving neck and neck blocking the entire road. Or the jerk in front of you that doesn't know where his gas pedal is - until you make a move to pass - and now he is matching your speed. Or trying to

What?? It's beautiful there. I can make some guesses as to why you feel that way, but would you mind elaborating? My girl and I are looking to make a move from B'ham in the next year or so, and we are probably staying in the Southeast for this move. Mostly looking at NC, VA, and KY.

Sorry for the thread-jack Good story though and yes, I park that way as well.
