Motor mount life span vs usage
Hi guys I did do a search but couldn’t find the answer specifically. I was watching a YouTube vid that Spencer Berke did on a full rod bearing change., it was a good watch. Anyhow the shop he uses seem to really have a grasp on our cars and he showed how our engine mounts are dog shit after they lose fluid etc..
my question is I have a 2009 Bmw e93 with only 43km or 27.8k miles so low all things considered, that being said it has been garage kept and up until last year I don’t think had seen rain or winter here in the west coast of Canada. It’s my daily so it’s now seen one winter and now the current one but it’s still 11 degree daytime and down to 5-6 at night. Anyhow could my mounts be shot given age as I feel more vibration then I remember a year ago. Specially when I’m neutral and rev it a bit. From watching the video you can tell if you hoist the car up and the engine is dropped more than it should be.. So is it time or usage or either one can do it. Vid below

It's a wear item on a 10+ year old car. The replacements are cheap and the labor isn't very difficult. Just replace them.
I did mine this past spring ('08 at 28k miles, garaged summer only car) when I replaced the bearings. The mounts were completely shot. I'd assume yours are as well.

Cheers I am saving to do bearings if I decide to keep the car long term. The vibration just seems to be worse than when 12km ago and after watching the vid I thought it made sense.p that the mounts were shot or at least the one side.

It's not just about how you use your car..... the gravity and the weight of the engine make it go away. You can see the driver's side engine mount from looking straight down from the air box tube.

Mine were completely toast at 28k miles. I won't even bother with stock ones. Just go for Vibra-Technics, or the new Powerflex ones.

Nothing that I really noticed. Maybe 5% more vibration during idle when new. Right now I can't tell the difference from stock. Maybe I just got used to it. Then again, my car is Stage 2 full decat. I notice exhaust noises more than anything else lol.

I can second this opinion. I didn't notice a difference in vibration at all. I am running Vibra-Tech as well.

Replaced engine mounts at 108,000KM today.
Slight collapse, some tears. I had vibration issues, jerky shifts, and the engine was wobbling around on mounts when going uphill. |

I had mine done at 60k miles along with the rod bearings. They were completely crushed. Car was noticeably smoother running and shifting after replacement. The thing is, the deterioration with the motor mounts was gradual so you don't notice it until you have new ones in. It really brings back that new car feeling.
I'd expect you want to do it about every 60k miles or 5 years.

Getting the RB done in a few months and looking to change the motor mount as well.
Comfort and durability are the primary concerns, still debating between OEM or VibraTech..
