Lotus Evora
I'm considering picking up a used Lotus Evora S 2+2 in the near future as a fun, weekend/track ride. (keeping the M3, of course!) Anyone with any experience with these cars?

I've talked to a few owners at track days -- they all seem to love the car. The underlying Toyota motor is probably pretty damn reliable, but the rest of it seems questionable.
BTW, don't fall for the "2+2" meme. The rear seat is literally unusable. I saw it in person last month at a track day; the guy could barely fit his helmet bag onto the seat, let alone a person with legs.

I like Lotus conceptually
The idea of paying sports car money for a car with a 4 banger engine based off of a econobox simply does not compute though, but that's just me. I've been in the Evora 400 instructing. It seems fine, no complaints |

So based on your thinking what does that make S55 motor used in Current M cars since its based off N55 motor thats been used in over 20 different model since its introduction. The most reliable part on that Lotus is its 4 banger econobox engine Im just saying. And of all the four banger Motors they could have picked from they chose a Toyota I wonder why.

What do i call the S55? A 6 cylinder engine What do i call the lotus engine? A 4 cylinder There is a clear and inequivocal difference in engine feel between a 4 cyl and a 6 cyl. Starting by the I6 being a balanced engine while the 4 cylinder is not So lets be clear: i do not want **any** 4 cylinder engine. They are all unworthy of being in a sports car. I don't care if it's the boxster 718s, a mini cooper s or the toyota microcar engine. The s55 or n55 may be pieces of shit as well, but a 6 cylinder piece of shit is orders of magnitude better than a 4 cylinder piece of shit

Like I mentioned before, the Toyota drivetrain is a plus to me. There's something to be said about inherent reliability and easy to find parts.
On another note, I got a chance to look at some 2017 Evora 400s today and I was impressed. Apparently the 2017 cars have a lot of improvements in braking, interior, and the front end is a bit more aggressive.

My bad, the Evora has a 6 cyl engine. For some reason I was thinking of the 1.8L engine of the smaller Lotus', not the 6 cyl.
However, again, V6 engines are unbalanced, coarse engines. But if you can't feel if the difference between that and an I6 then go ahead. There have been good 6 cyl engines throughout history that are V6, which is nice, but it is still an inferior design to the I6. |

If you get a “S” look into Komotec. They have a 460 hp package that is a pulley, tune, and exhaust. I was a passenger in one...unreal! If thinking about a 400, read this...you will want one as bad as me.

OP - The Lotus will be a better handing car than anything BMW makes right now. Smoking Tire had a loaner and did a series of track videos which are worth a watch. There are other compromises from driving a low volume niche car like a Lotus but if you want a pure sportscar your looking in the right direction.
As for it being a V6 not an I6, who cares? Its a very good engine by all accounts. The fact it's in the car in the first place should be celebrated. |

If your looking new, I can't see the value over a Cayman GT4.
Used? The Evoras have come a really long way since the S. They aren't all the same car. We see several here in Portland at track days, but theres a dealer in town thats very supportive. I hear the dealer is pretty unique. |

But your comment on the changes to the 2017/400 is spot-on. That's why I'm looking at the 400 now.

If you enjoy Matt Farrah's stuff, you'll catch that he just did a 718 GTS vs 2016 GT4 comparo and seemed to feel the 718 GTS was faster even possibly on a track. Short of the 6-cyl wail of the GT4, thats a really compelling package too. |
