If your OBD scan tool says that the readiness is "incomplete" then you wont pass. No easy way around it except to swap the cats in, flash your stock tune back and have the car inspected. I was in this very same dilemma but I sold the car before hand. I was actually going to have a set of vband clamps installed on the cats and the x-pipe to make swapping them on and off easier. The link below is where I got the idea from.

Looks way cleaner with vbands

ive searched a lot and some guys say theyve passed with catless + tune but i dont know how that would be.
anyone have experience with this in ny? is there any way around this other than removing xpipe and flashing back to stock?
Swap back cause you'll never pass. The anti foul spacer things don't work. I'm done with the shenanigans and this myself. I'm throwing my cats back on, taking the test pipe off, and leaving it at that. The stress every two years in NYC is annoying. Lol I'm over it.

Damn, this is really disappointing as I was looking to get test pipes, but I don't really want to deal with this NY emissions testing bs.

Want to buy mine? I need an inspection by October I believe and I'll be taking mine off and putting my cats back on. I'm sick of this shit every two years.... it was fun while it lasted

Not sure how you guys are not passing. It must be the tune you are using that does not set the emissions system correctly.

yep. Stock tune with Cats passes no problem. 15 minutes on a computer fixes this. Ask me how I know.

Wait - I am so confused.

1. HFC xpipe + no ESS tune = fail inspection?
2. Catless xpipe + ESS tune = pass inspection?
3. HFC xpipe + ESS tune = pass inspection?

Can someone confirm?

Can ESS tune can work with any HFC or catless xpipe?

The ESS tune disables two o2 sensors which will always make you fail. You should pass with hfc and stock ecu

Lol I'm with you. I just swapped back, now I have to flash back to stage 1 tune with ESS. They'll never pass, not in NYC.

Seems like gintani is shutting those two sensors off with tune.

Any way around this? I was told by them that I wouldn’t have an issue with getting inspected when I called to get my car tuned.
The tune only removes the CEL from the dash if I'm right... I just went through this problem. I took the test pipes off, put my cats back on, flashes back to stock,- and THEN I had to go through the drive cycle. I'm in Staten Island and managed to do it in one pass. We just planned for it and let the car cool near the highway and went back after 25 min and then timed the cycle as it stated and it worked. I couldn't believe it. So now I'm completely stock and slow as shit and only thing I have to worry about now is my tint. But I know someone,so I think I'm good.... good luck

Can I ask a dumb question since I am in a state that doesn't do this type of inspection?

Why would you buy a car knowing that this inspection exists and not have a way to pass inspection when needed?

Was this a law that was recently passed?

There are ways to mod the car and pass inspection without complete emissions compliance, although everyone wants a Gintani burble tune and you’ll never pass with it.

So I'm running an Akrapovic Evo (no primary cats + race cats post-sensors) plus a BPM Stage II tune and I've passed for two years in a row in NYC. As for emissions readiness, O2 monitors never go ready since rear O2s are turned off in the tune but everything else goes ready and I don't have a CEL. It's probably worth scanning the car and seeing where you're at.

I ended up swapping x pipes and flashing to stock tune. Bought a used bms fix since you can no longer buy them new, so hoping next inspection this will work and be much easier then swapping and flashing to stock.

Take off x-pipe (No Cats) and put OEM x-pipe pass the test and swap out again after you passed.

How is it possible to pass with the rear 02 turned off? That's my current dilemma
