Removing Harmonic Balancer
Hey im trying to do a oil filter housing gasket chang and i need to take off the vibration damper to get back to the screws holding the oil filter housing. I was able to take off the six torx 45 bolts but once i took the cap off there is e12 screws and the pully moves backwards which is bad. So i stopped. How do i get these e12 bolts and have the pulley stop moving? any special tool? The car came with a Macht Schnell pulley kit.
I already looked on youtube and forums and only saw other e92 models which are different. Even the macht schnell diy video didnt show them taking out those e12 bolts. MANY THANKS Last edited by Angr2387; 06-05-2021 at 02:13 AM.. |

Appreciate the link but it dosent tell me how to remove that pulley. Another forum member told me not to touch those 4 bolts that it will mess up my timing. I know now i dont have to take it out to reach those bolts behind the vibration damper but im still curious how does that pulley come off than? Number 9 on the diagram. Took off those six torx 45 and nothing

A forum member told me it requires a slight tap with the mallet and pry from behind. Thanks milehighm3 . Just wonder if someone wanted to take that vibration damper out what would be the correct method. Not that im going to just curiosity got the best of me.

@jeremyuhh went step by step on how to remove the oil filter housing and the proper process so you don't have to touch the harmonic balance. The link LITERALLY provided you the answer starting at step 7.
Read better. -Duke |

I did read properly . I know that you have to cut a torx 30 to reach the back and take the screws off. Its called learning and i wanted to find out more about the pully and balancer . The instructions didnt tell me to tap it with a mallet to take off the pully nor did it say it needed a puller to take out the balancer.
I appreciated the link the whole point of me wanting to take out the pully and balancer in the first place was to avoid cutting a torx30 to reach back there . I figure it shouldnt of been a big issue removing the balancer and pully . Didnt know the balancer was such a pain in the ass. So please dont assume i didnt search or looked at numerous youtube videos because i did . Still appreciate the link you provided regardless |

Ok ok, fair point, but I would NOT mess around with the balancer if you've never pulled one or reinstalled one.
See if you can find a hacksaw (or low profile torx bit) and do it that way. You're making it 10x more difficult if you pull it hah! Good luck! -Duke |

Thats the link i orginally was following i didnt have a 1/4 and my dumb ass used a 6 mm as the closest thjng i had . Spent all day trying to make it work, and was a big fail. Went to home depot got the last 1/4 and it was out in 10 mins. 1/4 is a must. Bolt got loose but wont come fully out yet as it hits the vibration damper. Calling it a day for today will finish tomm . Thanks to the community for the help. Learned no shortcuts and read the dam directions carefully and get the right tools.
