$1200 over invoice...too much profit?

So.....in a nutshell. Is $1200 over the invoice too much profit for them? I'm not one to haggle with a salesman about price....as long as I'm getting a great deal. However, after reading that some people are getting their cars at invoice and sub invoice....I'm starting to wonder.

What makes a dealer give up a car at cost when he must find a way to pay his staff? Are there holdbacks, maintenance fees, other hidden goodies that the dealer will keep to offset selling a car at invoice?

Bottom line....am I agreeing to too much profit for a 2008 M3 Coupe w/ Tech, Cold, Prem, moon, prem sound?

BTW, I'm in the Boston area and gave an initial agreement pending the return of my current leased vehicle. I have not signed a contract or application for the car.

Bottom line, you can get a 2008 M3 (E90/92/93) for invoice or lower right now. Do not pay anything above that. The market sets the price for the car and not the dealership. Fact is that there are many dealerships out there willing to sell for that much and if your dealer isn't than tell him you'll take your business elsewhere. Especially since you're a repeat customer!

Not necessarily... Because the dealers have to pay a cost for keeping the car on their lot and paying inventory fees as long as the car is sitting there. Depending on how long the car has been sitting there, it may very well be in their favor to release the car at or below invoice to avoid losing more money in the long run.. Bottom line.. for all 08 model M3s.. theyre already losing money.. now its a matter of are they willing to lose MORE or cut their losses now...

I am from the Boston area as well I paid $1000 over invoice for my E90 M3 about 3 weeks ago. They were reluctant/wouldn't go under invoice so I figured $1000 over is a good deal. Making the whole buying experience smoother is worth more to me than haggling over another possible $500-$1000.

I think your deal is good maybe you could get another $200-500 off at most?

Consumer Reports states that dealers get their cars @ a "REAL" price that is usually under invoice and a few times at invoice. They claim "INVOICE" as made up price set by the car manufacturer and as a sales tool against the buyer.

I paid 500 over invoice last week...I think I could have got it for the invoice or less if I pressed too hard...almost every dealer has more than 6 in their lot...

the dealer makes money even if they sell for the invoice and the sales guy makes 20% of what the dealer makes off the car...the sales woman told me that...

There is always some dealer holdback or manufacturer incentives that the dealer can rely on even if selling at their cost. They need to get rid of the 08's as the 09's are rolling in this month. Nobody wants 08's and 09's on their lots next to each other. There is always money to be made by the dealer even if selling at invoice. It's not hard work to haggle a little. I talked with a dealer for about 10 min the other day, about the economy and the car, and offered him $500 below invoice. They came back to me with invoice in about 10 min's. That wasn't very hard now was it? As long as you're open and honest with them and they know that you're a serious buyer than they'll be more willing to deal. Always remember that there are plenty of other dealers out there willing to negotiate a lower price.

You guys are driving the prices up in Boston! I got at least four E90 quotes at invoice, and I haven't even started negotiating yet. Don't pay over invoice for an '08. The economy sucks and nobody is buying.

Man if you want the car and you are happy with it, then pay the $1200 over invoice or be willing to find another car. That is still a great deal and when spending this much make sure you get what you want.

What one should be asking is how much of a depreciation hit does one take when you purchase a 2008, now that the MY 2009s are on the street

These are the kind of people dealers pray for to walk into their showroom. Maybe you have plenty of money to burn but it all adds up in the end.

I got about the same deal last week. 2008 Coupe, 6MT, cold weather, premium, sirius, hd radio, and clear bra installed for about 61k OTD. Invoice price was about 1200 less but I was happy with the deal and happier with the service and the car. The dealer also didn't have my car on his lot so he had to trade with FMW to get it to Norwood. I had a great experience with BMW Gallery Norwood, btw, and I'd recommend them if anyone hasn't dealt with them yet. Honestly, I may have been able to get a better price, but it wasn't worth the hassle since I did all of my work over email and the phone, as I am still living in Germany at the moment, at least until the end of the week.

And you are the guy that dealers try to get out of the showroom as quickly as possible. Do you haggle over the price of a gallon of milk with the 16 year old cashier at Wal Mart as well? If you aren't then you probably have money to burn.

$500 - $1000 is a fair deal. If you want just tell them that you are looking for a car at invoice and if they are ready to part with it at that price point, to call you.
