Car ownership in NYC?

Hey all. Moving to NYC from Toronto, Canada. I plan on living in Manhattan. Car will be used only for pleasure purposes on the weekend. Are there any reasonably priced garages outside of the city, within reach by train? I’d imagine insurance will be high given that I have no US driving records?

Thanks!

You can park your m3 monthly for a few hundred in Manhattan. It all depends where you are located

probably can find something that would be like $150 if you go somewhat far out in queens / bronx / brooklyn etc. but i think i will take the joy out to need to take a subway to get your car.
in manhattan the price range will be pretty big, depends on where, probably will range from $250 to $600 etc...

Also depends on if you park in a lot where easy access on short notice is needed or not. There are some where you need to give lots of heads up to extricate your car buried behind a million cars.

I have a sweet deal in my building west village for 350/mth but know guys 5mins away where its crazy like 1k/mth. You should also bank on having NO chance of avoiding valet parking.

We moved from toronto and went from 2 cars to zero cars. That lasted 8yrs but I got sick of zipcar etc, bit the bullet and got an M-car and pay the parking tax

Go Raptors.

NYC and reasonable price doesn't go well together. I've seen some groupon deals at places like icon but it's still a pretty penny. GL OP and welcome to the big apple.

Thanks all, much appreciated! The parking seems doable then.. how about insurance? I’ve been driving in Canada for 12 years, and have a clean record. Currently pay around $120/month for insurance.

Canadian living in NYC for 2+ yrs. I was driving in Toronto for 10+ yrs. Expect to pay a much bigger premium because they pull your US credit score which you will lack when you first move here. Also, I had no previous auto insurance history in the US which also didn’t help...

I went with Geico and they needed a NY State license (I had to exchange my Ontario one), plus provide a 3yr drivers abstract from the Ministry of Transportarion, Ontario.

If you’re only here temporarily, you might want to look into ‘temporary import for personal use’ since you have to do quite a few things beforehand to import into the US.

My monthly for my other car in Manhattan is $400.00 after tax. We have a significant city parking tax too.

Budget yourself hundreds per month just on the parking space. Also, prepare yourself for charges that continually go up, availability that always seems to go down, and either a long trek to get the car or a major logistical nightmare to have it removed from the garage by a valet.

This doesn't even count the insane gas prices, vehicle registration, and whatever other fees they levy on it.

Maybe some NY folks here can suggest some clever ways to put it in NJ, i.e. Hoboken or Weehawken?

At this point, even breathing in Manhattan costs money.

And everything is only getting worse, with this congestion pricing tactic that Albany will soon roll out.

Lincoln Center. $450 a month, never changes. Totally self parking, no valet, always space. Ramp entrance on 61st Amsterdam is M3 friendly, a mildly lowered car can get in without scraping. Plenty of other nice metal parks in there too.

If you live by the ferry, its only an 8 minute ride on the Weehawken ferry and when I moved out it seemed they were building a parking garage there, but no idea on pricing or availability of long term parking, but I would guess it would be $200+ per month (website seems to say $225 but who knows if that is updated).

Downside of that is the ~$20 round trip ferry cost each time you want to drive the car and the fact that River Road is a nightmare on the weekends (one of the reasons I moved away).

Overall, its probably not much cheaper and adds logistical hurdles.

I had good experience getting Allstate to recognize my Canadian driving record and give me a break on the premiums when I moved to the US (14 years ago..)

i live in Brooklyn and have lived here for 13 years. Plenty of indoor garage parking for $200-300. Manhattan is pretty shit for car ownership, Brooklyn is just fine. Both wife and myself work in Manhattan and muuuuuuch prefer living in Brooklyn.
