"Why do you spend so much on your car?"
My lovely girlfriend came into the bedroom this morning with a cup of hot coffee and a yellow paper in hand, the bill of just over $1300 for a set of Michelin PSS.
The question came. Like Thor's hammer smashing down upon fine china, her jaw dropped, eyebrows raised, and arms folded. She asked the dreadful question, "why do you spend so much on your car?" I point to the copious amount of Chanel makeup and "rose petal face creams" in the adjacent bathroom, and her arms fold a bit tighter. I told her, "well darling, I could explain in detail the benefit of a set of PSS, with the superior lateral G's and sidewall strength, or I could show you." So we proceed down to the garage where her VW Tiguan sits close to my E92 and I hand her the key's. I have yet to let her drive it. She gets in, and we start in D2. I guide her towards the nearest twisty's, and tell her to press the M button. Now armed and ready, she's off. Initially she's cautious. Familiarizing herself with the paddles and shifting at around 3500 rpm. She seems unimpressed. As she gets more comfortable with the car, she starts to open it up. Now using the paddles quite well and holding gears to near redline, this massive grin lights up upon her face. She carves the road, hugging every corner and flooring it through the straights. After nearly two hours and a half tank of gas, she doesn't want to go home. Finally we proceed back to the house and she asks how she can make her Tiguan "feel like that". While I explain that's quite the tall order, she settles for an APR chip tune and intake for her 2.0t which she bought on her dime. I could not have loved her any more than this moment. These M cars truly are something special, so special in fact that they have the ability to turn an angry girlfriend into a very, very happy one. A feat not much can successfully do. |

great story. I got my girlfriend to appreciate cars after taking her on extended drives in the M as well.
I'm not going to let her fry my clutch yet, but she now wants to learn stick and buy a fiat 124 as her next car. Small victories! |

Best story to read here in a minute! I too have been queried about M purchases as my wife and I have two beautiful children. I have not gone down explanation road as it usually defers down way too many questioning side streets but your small victory for men here makes me laugh out load! Good work sir.

Nice story!
However, her question really should have been "why would you buy PSS when you could have bought PS4S?" |

If only rod bearings could be purchased individually, it would be much easier to not have to explain to my wife why I just ordered $900 worth of little "metal things and screws"... oh and that they will run another $1500 to install. I thought I was being smart by stockpiling cash in my dresser drawer for the install, but last week I got the question 'why do you have twelve hundred dollars cash in the bottom of your sock drawer?' It wouldn't be a big deal at all except I told her this would be a "very reliable BMW unlike the last one"...

Glad it worked out for you bud. Usually a question like that is followed by a fight and sometimes worse lol. My wife and I have been married for 16 years and I've been through many cars in that time. At this point, she knows better than to ask me that question!
I hadn't considered putting her behind the wheel before...might be worth a shot???

That’s hilarious, and was a nice read.
I wish the same trick worked on my wife. Instead she’s content “agreeing to disagreeing” - I get my car stuff, she gets her crap that I won’t pretend to understand either. Although she was somehow very content when I surprised her with a sportier family car (QX70S vs the RX350). I did switch from an E46 6MT to the E90 DCT with the hopes she would drive it occasionally. We’ll see. Last edited by wyatth; 11-24-2018 at 09:19 PM.. |

Great read, thanks for sharing that.
I think I might shift my focus to looking for a DCT e90M instead of a 6MT so my wife will enjoy driving it more. She drives a stick, but I see her enjoying the rev matching down shifts etc of the DCT! |

Anytime I got serious with a girl, I'd explain that the cars come with me, short of some life altering illness or financial hardship. It's been that way since I was 17.
I did manage to convert my wife to a BMW driver. She didn't think they were a big deal until she drove one.
