It is undeniable that some M3 videos have intense, clear and terrific sounds and some, like my feeble attempt at videos, have a sound that does not let the V8 express its feelings as it should.

If one would to connect external microphone to a GoPro or similar camera, where would the microphone be placed?

External next to the exhaust?
in the trunk?
engine compartment?
just in the car someplace?

Any advice on capturing a great sound would be appriciated

In the above video, I taped mine to the rear bumper right above the exhaust.

Get a wind sock and squish it between the trunk and bumper.

i recently switched to a better mic that is powered by the gopro (no additional batteries or on/off switch). you'll need an adapter.

I have the GoPro adapter.
Does the mic comes with a long enough stereo cable?

I already have this external mic.
it sounds terrible from inside the car.
So i was looking for a placement first before getting something else.

My stereo cable is not long enough for the trunk. so need another longer cable

OMG.
I got the furry thingy and 2M extended stereo patch.
Taped the microphone to rear bumper and went for 3 minutes drive to record the sound.

Played the video on my laptop.

The sound is intoxicating. So good.
I can't wait to record a session with this setup.

So... I have learn something today and might as well share it.

I also called GoPro to validate my suspicion.

Basically if you use the quick record button of the GoPro, it does not recognize the external microphone and you get no sound.

To use the external microphone you need to turn the GoPro on, wait for it to finish initialize it self, then hit the record button.

It is entirely possible that I am the last person to learn this issue, but might as well document this feature.

First crack at video & audio. Ran the mic out the trunk and zip tied to the license plate. Be gentle on my driving - pretty new to tracking & was taking it easy with the water on the track in a few areas.

Mic - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (apparently there is a newer version)
Furry thing - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
GoPro Hero 7 Black

Thanks to roastbeef for the suggestions above

Excellent sound.
I am finally home and hope to record my sound and camera position. It won't be on the track, but hopefully will be a good indication for track day.

Can you share your camera mounting solution?

Just tape it to the rear bumper right underneath the license plate, pointing downwards. I have tried interior recording and it's always a gamble with wind noise since the windows have to be down. It's why I just settled on the rear bumper.

Here's how it sounds with a $30 Audio-Technica on the rear bumper of my M3 and my Corvette:

Using the Tackform headrest mount attached to the passenger seat.

Tackform is good shit. I met the owner a few years ago and he's a cool dude that definitely wants to offer a good product instead of just some cheap overseas-made garbage.

It's the mount I used in my M3 video above.

Yeah first impression is definitely a good one. Build quality looks good and very easy to setup & position. Very stable as well.

Always good to hear about owners like that - definitely the kind you want to support.

Since my seats no longer have the headrest post, it may or may not work for me.

Never the less, you set me on the right direction.

I order from Amazon the Trackform and also Manfrotto arm and will see which one works best.

Here is my current sound and video angle mounted to the passenger seat.

With some kind of arm, the camera can be moved more toward the center. But I am not yet convinced.

Sound - exhaust sound is much better then inside recording. Please advice on how to get rid of the whooshing sounds and the clicks.

What I need to try next is to rotate the camera a bit toward the driver since at this angle, it shows too much the passenger A pillar

** Edit **
I moved the seat back and selected narrow angle on the GoPro. That pretty much have me the angle I want.

The key to the video angle would be a remote coach. If he/she can see what needed (hands and track) + the EVO5 data, then this is good enough.

Do you have a roll bar of some sort? Without the headrest posts I don’t really see the tackform working for you. Closer to center could help or combo of rotating and zoom maybe? How do you have it mounted in that video?

Sound seems to be good - might test it in a spot without barriers to see if that is what is creating the wind noise?

I have the BK harness bar.
It sits low and too far back.
But with the arm and U bolt, it has potential
