Upgrading 2009 iDrive software?

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the pre 2010 cars couldn't upgrade the iDrive software, presumably as the hardware isn't capable?

Got a used 2009 E92 and I figured it would be nice to update the software to whatever is the latest version, the BMW Update website doesn't seem to list anything for the 2009.

I also see some posts here for the 2015 Maps, is that something we can use on the 2009s?

Thanks guys!

software update ur talking about can be done module by module but i rather get the dealer to upgrade the entire car. also if you have certain 2009 production, the map update cant be done via usb.

For what it's worth, my dealership said they'd update the CIC software for $40. They ran into a snag, and the recommendation was to bring up the level of the entire vehicle, which the used car department ended up goodwilling (would have been a few hundred, otherwise).

If your nav screen has the "i" with the check mark on it, it already has the updated software.

bumping an old thread. I'd like to update my navigation maps to at least 2018. I am still running 2009. After research it looks like I need to have my car software updated prior to having the maps update. I called my local dealership and they had no idea what I was talking about. They said I could update the navigation maps via DVD but I am fairly certain 2015 was the last year for DVD based maps.

Anyone know specifically what I need to ask the dealership to do so I am able to utilize the USB port to update maps?

Are you running CCC system versus a CIC? From my understanding, CCC is no longer supported for newer map updates and is only updated using a DVD. CIC is updated through the USB port and newer maps are available.

I am not sure if I have CCC or CIC. I have model year 2009, production Sept 2008. I have two USB ports (one in glovebox and the other in armrest). Sorry for my ignorance on this. I have idrive with the newer knob not the old school silver dial

Post a picture of your iDrive or Google the CCC screen or CIC screen.

If you have the updated controller then you have CIC, CIC Menu has a list going down vs CCC which has the 4 boxes

CIC then, it's not the oldschool 4 boxes (navigation, radio, etc). It's the one with the list

Buy a map update online and it’s four sequential usb files plus a code.

Mine isnt as easy as that since my CIC is older. I have to update the car software first before being able to utilize USB functionality to update the maps

Try to find somebody local with an ICOM (which is a physical piece of hardware) and ISTA-P (software) to update the entire car. Its an easy process with the right equipment.

I can't get my 2009 M3 to update maps via USB. It's CIC, I checked on the BMW website, says my software is up to date. I'm still running 2009 maps. Would love to update it but can't get it to via USB. Tried different USB's too.

Same boat, same model year.

- I've tried 3 different USBs (all formated to FAT32)
- 1b.hex file will generate, had some issues with the CIC generator but Jaeger fixed the file for me and I am able to retrieve my FSC code.
- Tried multiple times to have vehicle prompt the update (split screen, non-split screen, etc).
- I have the 'i' in the lower left corner of the navigation screen (iStep?)

My last ditch effort is that my map file was corrupted and I'll try uses a different type thanks to Gary.

Just found this on the internet... is this our problem??
"Cars made before 03/2010 with original firmware (no update since you bought the car), then you can ONLY update to 2014 map via DVDs, as the DVD version of 2015-2 map is NOT released at the moment."
This is an older post.. but do we have to do a DVD update to 2014 first to get it to update to 2019 via USB?

But also found this, so not sure.. BMW says my software is up to date
"We strongly recommend customers with cars made before 03/2010 to have your car firmware updated from local dealers in order to update the 2019-1 and future maps by USB memory stick."

My assumption is the firmware needs to be updated as others have stated.

Production: 09/2008 for me. But I thought Gary said he was 03/2009 and he was able to get it work flawlessly
