Good news Houstonians...

Quote:
A petition to ban red light cameras in Houston has been certified by the city secretary, making it all but certain that voters will decide in November whether the 70 devices at intersections across the city will be taken down.

Study upon study has shown that red light cameras do not reduce accidents at intersections, and that in many cases, accident rates increase. Toss in a little tinkering with the length of the yellow, and all you have is a revenue scheme.

What I've read is that studies show an increase in rear-end collisions but a decrease in t-bone collisions. But what I or anyone else says about studies on the internet is crap without a cite.

Dump em.

I've recieved two tickets from making right on red turns.

We are supposed to live in a society that cherishes and protects LIBERTY. just because a new piece of tech comes along doesnt mean it should be used. never trade liberty for security. We now live in an Orwell world.

Goverment grows and grows. Advocating stealing property from one to give to another. Of course allowing itself a generous living and absolute power in the process. And taking by sticking a gun in your face if you don't comply.

Regarding liberty vs. security: I'd be happy to have a law that stripped someone of their liberty to drive for 14 days as a penalty for running a red light.

In my side of town, Humble, we got a few and think it has cut down on the red light running.

Honestly, I'll vote to keep the cameras. Spicoli024 can attest to this as I got my red light ticket at 5:35am in a Cayenne GTS...totally deserved it

Old old study

I'll be voting against them. No tickets, and at first I was for them. However, once I read about the city shortening the yellow length at a few lights (see if I can find that link,) I have to call BS. Simply lengthening yellow light times seems to be the most effective way to cut down all accident types, but man, it's a bitch on revenue.

Not to mention the amount spent on purchasing, installing, and maintaining the damn things.

+1 get rid of the damn things. I hate approaching a camera intersection and wondering if the light is going to turn yellow right at the point where I've gotta either gun it or slam on the brakes. I've thought a couple of times that I might have run a red just barely but no tickets.

I think it's just a BS revenue-generating scheme. For those of you concerned about getting t-boned, just use caution when entering an intersection right after the light turns green (which you should do regardless of whether cameras cover that intersection).

I'm sure Frank would be happy to see the back of these cameras

Watching Frank's red light camera video was pretty funny
