I wouldn't view the situation that way, if I were you. We're in the first year of the new model M3 and you have three things, any one of which is enough to scare away a majority of buyers, working against you:

1. it's an 80k mile car
2. has been modified
3. has some stories in it's repair history

You've worked your way down in price by selling off modifications, but are still $1k above what KBB says the car is worth in a private party sale.

When you mention repair history, do mean the front end accident the OP disclosed or the recent transmission replacement and other parts? Are these stories that significant to affect value?

What does KBB say the value is? Do you know trade in value by chance?

I referred a friend to this thread who is in the market and has similar questions.

I would be driving up to CT today for this if I could sell my M5 for more than a few pennies. Sorry I'm not adding anything of value. Bump for you

Just curious what trade in value is. I would have thought it would be close to your selling price but I guess I am wrong.

Trade-In
Rough Trade-In $25,300
Average Trade-In $27,550
Clean Trade-In $29,425

Retail
Clean Retail $33,225

With that said most dealer would probably offer something in the ballpark of ~$23,000 - $24,000 for the trade in, but dealerships are like that. Its rather convoluted to say because assuming that the car owner is buying another car off the lot the dealer could be negotiated down using the trade-in price.

The things that is wrong here are the things listed before and that and it is really hard to sell a 30k used sports car with "higher" mileage privately. The car looks great to me and well inspected so you should know exactly what you are getting yourself into, but its a matter of trust and perception. It seems easier to work with the dealership then a private party if something immediately becomes wrong with the car. I don't know if thats true or not. GLWS!

Couldnt have said it better myself. Thank you for your insight. I have been made trade in offers anywhere from $22,000 to $24,000 which in my honest opinion is just not enough. Granted the dealership assumes the risk when they take in a trade in, but given the maintenance and documentation this car comes with i feel it would better be suited in the hands of a private buyer. I feel my bottom line of $27,900 is more than fair. If there continues to be no interest in the car I may just give up and take the lower trade in value as it is doing no good sitting in my driveway covered being driven maybe once a week if that. Maybe the right buyer will come around sooner or later! Just wishful thinking.
