Adding Sirius - sticker shock

I'm posting in the Canadian section because of the price differences for service versus the states.
I had an appointment at a BMW dealership yesterday and while I was there I asked how much it would cost to activate Sirius in my car. It already has the capability for Sirius but it is not enabled.
They quoted me $540 in parts and a further 4 hours in labour. You can do the math for the total labour rate.
Does anyone have experience using an aftermarket audio shop do this work? I realize the car will need to be coded once this "part" is installed.

Thanks

Sorry I cannot help on mine it was part of the package, however, I was thinking, why not check south of the border, I don't think our American friends would charge you such an outrageous amount. Why not e-mail the closest US dealership to you and check it out. Then put your Canadian dealership to shame.

Wow. Yeah, get the parts from maybe one of the US vendors here (if cheaper), and have a local, enthusiast recommended shop do the labour...

That is about right as I remember another M3 owner getting it done and it was about $1100.

I think I had to pay about 2.5 hours for labour after I installed mine for the coding. In fact it actually took 24 hours since they had to start the process over a few times. I think I got the module itself from EAS and at the time it came with a year's service.

I believe your car has to come with an option/part which allows Sirius to be installed. They then add the module to this component to allow for Sirius tuning. I'm sure one of the audio experts can comment further.

pre MY10 models will need the standalone Sirius module.

Since BMW is no longer manufacturing them, used/classifieds are the only source for one.

My dealer just quoted me $435 for my '12 E92 (which is Sirius capable). Can't remember if that included labor, but it includes a one-year subscription. Sorry, but I'm not familiar with fitting this option outside of BMW. IMO, $435+ is ridiculous though.

That is Soooooo not worth it!

I would recommend getting the app called tune in radio and just stream radio from your phone with the apple connector I you don't have BMW apps.

Only reason I listen to Sirius used to be for Howard Stern but now he's down to 3 days per week so I no longer have Sirius.

Tune in radio is an awesome app to stream Internet radio from all over the world.
