I've updated to 2018-1 but I rarely use it. As BOOF-M3 mentioned, windy roads are the best use case for the maps when A-GPS signal is poor on the iPhone.

These comments are crackin' me up lol. I completely agree, the navigation sucks, that's why I never use it. I have thought about updating it though, just because.

Side note - I have been helping/observing a friend rebuild an E39 540i over the last couple months. You should see the nav in that thing lmao. We laughed our asses off the first time we used it while on a test drive after doing work on the car.

I keep the map in the right iDrive screen up and zoomed in so I can see upcoming street names as I drive. I find it useful especially if I don't have Waze up on my phone at the time.

I updated last year to 2017 maps but not sure when I'll do it again.

EDIT: Found the torrent and went ahead and updated to 2018 last night. Didn't even ask me for my FSC code this time...I guess putting it in last year was sufficient.

Traffic info in iDrive comes over the radio, it's not part of the Assist package or any subscription. It was never terribly accurate IME, but it also varies by metro area and how the traffic data is collected (TSRs, etc).

It's coming via the radio's traffic message channel.

You guys are bitching about a navigation system from 2009? It's almost 10 years old, give it a break!

If you want something more modern, buy a newer car or do an NBT retrofit.

Even with NBT retrofit, I think BMW could have done a much better job at labeling streets in certain map scale. Granted, the hardware-driven improvement over CIC are notable (better graphics, much smoother and faster response in all functions, etc), but I've still found myself limiting the map scaling to 800 ft or lower if I want to get a good idea of the major through streets ahead; at least in and around Los Angeles area that I'm in.

Have not checked out how the navigation map looks in MY2016 or newer cars, maybe BMW made bigger improvement with the NBT Evo system?

NBT id6 is a massive improvement on the 2018 M2. I tend to use it more than apple car play maps. The best part is the maps have lifetime updates OTA.

Sorry for potato quality pic.

Nbt evo is amazing with iDrive 6.1 but traffic is a paid service through BMW assist so I’m not sure if E9x with retro would be able to make that work, maybe someone else can chime in.

I updated my 2011 M3 from the original 2011 maps to the 2018 maps yesterday, and they are significantly better. That said, I generally use Waze on my iPhone for traffic, speed and camera alerts (even in my 2016 125i with iDrive 4 and RTTI).

As someone mentioned above, it's nice to have the map up just to see the surrounding streets when navigating without directions, or on a fun road.

Worked perfectly for me

Got my code using the USB method with the generator, then loaded the update from USB as well. Took less than 15 mins.

Sorry didn't realise you guys were USA. You'll need to track down the files for the 2018 USA maps. Loading them can also be done from the USB, but I think you have to either swap the files out for each of the DVDs (four or five, can't remember), or have separate USBs loaded up. The Australian maps are less than a single DVD.

Comes with instructions.

The one item you will need is a 1 byte hex file. Google cic 1b hex generation to figure out how to get this file. It's posted online somewhere.

Are you sure the updates are "lifetime" ?
I am certain that someone needs a subscription to the data service for this to work.
So you pay for it in one way or another
Easier to update the whole map by yourself.

The ota update also only updates your region.
In our case not even the neighbor state Oregon. But they include Hawaii. Lol, like we all ship our cars back and fourth between island and mainland.
I am sure I would drive to Oregon before I need my car in Hawaii. What a brain fart from BMW to create the region like this.
