What's this button for?

Sorry if this is a dummy question but I bought my car used and it didn't come with a manual so... (bugs me because believe me... I like to )

I understand the tpms symbol and what it represents by why on earth would we have a button for such a thing as opposed to just a dash light indicator?

Troll? Me or you?

Anyway, thanks for the response I was unaware that you had to "reset" the tpms for any reason. In any other car I've had with tpms, once the correct air pressure is attained the tpms resets itself.

No offense, there are so many trolls on this forum. I am not even sure why the button was there the first place. You can reset TPMS over idrive.

Yes, there is a need for that button (or the idrive equivalent), mostly for when you are switching rims (from winter to summer for instance).

All depending on the year of your cars build and the options, you find detail instructions in your manual. Have a look under "Tire Pressure Monitoring" and you will find all you need to know.

Basically you need to reset each time you adjust your tire pressure or change your wheels. US cars have the Tire Pressure Monitoring device as part of the wheel, Canadian cars have it external. It will warn you if your pressure is going low (slow leak) or if you have a flat. If you have the iDrive it will display a message. In the case of the US car (with iDrive) it will show you exactly what tire has the problem. Sometimes the alarm goes off for no reason at all. It is wise to cary a air pressure gauge so you can check your air pressure.

A waste of a hard button, another more used function could have gone there.

+1

I also find the hot/cold adjust wheel (right below that button) somewhat redundant. Shouldn't the temperature adjustment knobs be enough? I don't really get it...

That button I believe is covered in the M Supplement Manual rather than the regular manual because on the non-M 3ers, that's where the DTC button is. Since the M3 doesn't have a DTC button, I guess they felt they had to put something else there, though I agree a TPMS reset is an odd choice. That said, I've never found myself thinking, "You know what button I could really use on the dash?" so I don't really care.

That knob has been discussed several times here, but basically it controls the air temperature ONLY for the air that leaves the center vents. So for example you could set it to cold and set your climate control high so you have an overall warm car but keep cool air blowing on your face, which can help you stay awake. Since I'm in Texas I usually just leave it on cold, or at most in the middle. I don't really care about the feature, but some people swear by it.

Thanks jphughan! That makes a little more sense but I still find it somewhat redundant. Just my opinion.

Might work a little easier in the E93 (preferrably with the top down!)
