Waiting For My 2013 e92 M3 with 20k Miles

So I'm patiently waiting for a 2013 e92 M3 to be delivered to a local CarMax. Just under 20k miles, Competition, Premium and Cold Weather packages for $44k. Alpine white, black leather int and DCT btw. When I first called CarMax they said it didn't have any of the packages and no modifications. I looked up the VIN so that's how I saw it had those packages and even confirmed it with a local BMW dealer. CarMax also said that it didn't have any modifications but as you can see in one of the pictures it has a Dinan CAI. I'm thinking either they don't know or they didn't mention because you're not allowed to have a CAI here in California which I just found out on the Dinan website (car originally from MN). I'm wondering if I could have CarMax purchase a stock intake for the car just in case.
Other than them not knowing what the car has, my experience with them has been pretty good. They've been keeping me up to date on the delivery of the car which has taken longer than expected.
Once they do get it, there's a BMW dealership down the road that I plan to bring it to for inspection somehow. Hopefully it gets here soon!

Well the car technically comes with a cold air intake from the factory. All yours has is a Dinan CF intake elbow so I don’t know if THAT would interfere with whatever laws you have or changes anything. That elbow doesn’t do anything to reduce intake air temp or move the filter any further from where it sits in stock form

haha I was thinking the first mod would be to remove the CarMax sticker then I can work on those headlights.

I was thinking it might just be the CF elbow and I would just have to pop that cover off to see what the intake is. Either way the Dinan CF elbow looks pretty clean!

Yea most likely it’s an aftermarket filter also.

I'm hoping it is. Don't know who would spend $900+ on a Dinan CF elbow and not spend an extra $70 for the filter. Go big or go home...

Congrats that's a clean winner! I bought my car from Carmax a month ago after having them ship it cross country and overall the experience was good except for front bumper drilling, but yours already has that! There have been a couple small issues that they are fixing via 30 day warranty and I bought the 75k mile warranty as well. I worked with two different sales people and it seems Carmax in general has no clue about these cars but as long as you do, you'll be fine. They sure are easy to work with though and how 'bout those warranty options!

Oh and don't bother with their financing. My FICO was 824 and they gave me 6.5% which was ridiculous and forced me to go to my credit union. Should have just done that in the first place apparently.

They just got the car this morning so they still have to do their inspection on it. I'm hoping it's ready first thing tomorrow. So you think the 75k mile warranty is worth it? Guess I'm just skeptical about their shop having experience with M3's. I'm also wondering if I can get them to pay for the dreaded rod bearings replacement under their 30 day warranty

I already got approved at a local credit union for 2.64% so happy about that.

No one will replace rod bearings unless there are signs that they are failing. I went with 75k and $150 deductible warranty for $2200 something. Pretty cheap IMO but 100k was like $3600, which I suppose is still reasonable. My car is a loaded 2012 E92 with 35k miles and Carmax price was $39k. Your car looks like it has less wear but mine is not bad at all.

I won't replace RBs until sometime after 50k and at 75k I'm happy to take over the overall risk. The way I understand the warranty is that you can take it directly to BMW after the 30 day initial warranty is up. If there are big ticket repairs, Carmax will send out someone to approve the costs. At least that's what I've read of people's experiences on BMW forums.

Oh, and have them remove the rear sticker when you pick up it. They'll do that.

I was being hopeful about them replacing the RBs but figured at 20k miles, I still have some time before I just get it done at PM. Warranty doesn't sound bad at all. Would any mods like exhaust, tune... void that warranty?

Thanks, I'll definitely ask them to remove that sticker!

If you have a rod bearing failure I'm sure they would try and find any excuse to not pay but not sure a tune is something that BMW will find or note to Carmax. I do know you better have good maintenance records since purchase though and don't ignore recommended services.

Carmax will not pay for bearings for a few reasons. One is that they do not negotiate. The 2nd reason is why would they replace something that is in perfect working order. Bearings are either intact or toast. There is no in between. But if you could negotiate with them and get them to change out the bearings I am sure they would only replace them with OEM, which would defeat the purpose. Don't stress too much about the bearings, enjoy the car.

It's official! My experience at CarMax went really well. Decided to go with the extended warranty (75k miles) for a little over $2k even though their service center is closed on the weekends but it gives me peace of mind. First 30 days if I find anything wrong I have to bring it back to them but after that I can bring it anywhere including BMW.

I put a big chunk down and got the rest financed through a local Credit Union. CarMax rep even drove me to the Credit Union to pick up the check.

Once I finished up at CarMax I drove it around the corner to BMW to take care of a driver side airbag recall, inspection and decided to get an oil change even though CarMax said they did one already. They couldn't tell me what oil they used so that made me feel uneasy. Everything checked out, got some nice compliments on the car from the service guy there too. Time to enjoy the car!

Congrats! Beautiful M3, everything looks perfect except for that front license plate mount/drilled bumper. I will never understand mounting that thing, front license plate required or not.

Yeah, hate that it was drilled in already. Considering getting a new bumper but will wait until summer is over.

Frozen white, nice! I was looking at a couple of Frozen White M3's in SoCal, but one with 7k miles sold before I could get to it and the other had it up for sale but changed his mind and decided to keep it (good decision).

Looking good and smart decision to change the oil. It looks like they go with a 5/40 synth of some sorts typically at Carmax. Are you going to let us decide on your mods or are you going to want input also because I know a member who shall remain nameless EJT86 who has some pretty good ideas on some mods that will not effect your warranty
