Supercharge ??

I have a chance to pick up a lightly used ESS 650 supercharger for about 40% of the cost new. I know the owner and the car it came off of. Only 3k miles on it. My question is what's this going to do to the resale value of my car? When I shopped for a used m3, I didn't want a car that had been supercharged. I'm assuming others will feel the e same way. Opinions?

When time comes to sell, the majority of the market may be put off by the fact that you put boost on the engine. Even if you went all out and took care of the Main/Rod bearings they'll still pass youre car up. However, there will always be a niche for the ones that want to buy the car supercharged, so if you do sell with the unit installed, that is a benefit. I feel you can ask a 2-4k premium on a supercharged unit. But at the end of the day, just do what you want, don't worry about resale. You'll loose very little if maintained well!

Do it for yourself and not what the next person wants. If you don't want it bad enough don't do it. I personally would buy it. Add in the tune for 1000$ and install if you can't do the job to the price in your mind.

These motors fail just as often N/A as the do charged so don't sweat that.

did you buy the car to enjoy or to resell? you own a 10 year old mass produced car, just install the blower and enjoy it.

Buy the supercharger. I would. I am trying to enjoy my car not preserve it for its next owner.

You probably going to spend more on the supercharger install than you will loose in resale value - assuming that you are not going to install it yourself, and that you might want to replace rod bearings at the same time, as well as you would still need to buy a tune for your car from ESS for like $800-1000. I would say in total it might be $3K+ to get it installed on the car.

Besides if you get back to stock before you sell the car most of the buyers will not be able to figure out if it was supercharged in the past, though that would be something like $1K+.

Personally, I do not worry about re-sale value at all. I'm on a second E93 both were supercharged with ESS 650 and I never thought about selling the car, especially after getting it supercharged.

Yes, I'd feel the same as ypu OP. Would never buy an M3 that has been super charged. Buuut, I wouldn't mind have it myself on my car.

do it enjoy it and when you are ready to sell the car, pull the blower off put the stock parts back on and sell the blower just like the owner is doing that you are looking to buy them from.

Rod bearings, actuators, valve cover gaskets have been done already. I can be in this altogether for about $5600. installed. Should be a no-brainer. Thanks for the input.

In my search I wouldn't touch a car that had any history of a supercharger. If you sell with one installed I think the value is same as with no supercharger although the right buyer may pay extra to buy a supercharged car. It will likely be more difficult to sell in the future but at this point unless you are keeping a pristine OEM car for someone else, do what makes you happy and don't worry about resale to the next owner.

Problem is that there are many people out there who remove the supercharger and then sell the car without disclosing that it was supercharged. What percentage of used cars are listed as "all stock" when they were not always stock. People do shady things for money. We actually see it with warranty fraud because the perpetrators don't need to hide it from us. Many even take pride in it.

If you want an all-around badass car, then supercharge it. In my opinion, the supercharger makes this car viable to keep around and be relevant while retaining the fact that it has a V8, high revs, hydraulic steering, and plenty good enough tech, with a very comfortable interior. The only real shortcoming one can say about this car is horsepower (arguably, depending on what you care about). But if you care about power and also love the V8 in this car and what makes it special, then IMO supercharging is a great way to really make the E9x a monster that's engaging and unique in a world where all other cars seem to be going the opposite direction.

I love my car , often I toss around the idea of changing cars , For the money this is the best package. Moving up for this power level and performance is going hard to find under 45k. Hands down best bang for the buck

Forget resale do whatever you want to do. For $5600 altogether I would defiantly get it.

If you want a supercharger, get it. I would advise against failing to advise a subsequent buyer that the car had been supercharged, since that may constitue actionable fraud by doing so. Defending a lawsuit will cost you far more than the small amount you may sacrifice on resale by being honest.

If you really want an sc then go for it, premature engine wear and a lower resale value are almost guaranteed.

I would pay more for a supercharged car that was just somebody's toy who likes fast cars than a non charged car that has spent most of it's life on the track. The non charged car will have more wear on every component on the car.

Also what premature wear? Based on my research of any engine troubles with the s65, mainly rod bearings, the supercharged cars are not failing any faster than the N/A motors. Nor do they have any issues the N/A one doesn't have.

I hear ya but we're not talking about someone's track toy here we're talking daily drivers. I absolutely would not pay a premium for a sc car with similar kms, year etc over a stock engine.. I understand your research but you have to admit most people on here saying their sc cars are holding up just as well as non sc cars are a little biased and really don't have an apples to apples comparison.

For premature the engine wear it may not be relevant within the first 100k kms of the cars life but long term it comes down to the fact that the car was not designed to be ran with boost and continually running boost through any car not designed for it will wear components sooner than later; spark plugs, coils, injectors are prime examples.
