interesting how MB has turned the AMG GT into basically a 911 fighter. And been somewhat successful. Both have a base model (carrera s, gts) , convertible, road/track car (GT3 and GTR) and pure track (3RS vs GTR Pro, and 2RS vs Black Series).

I still feel front engine cars are at a disadvantage though for many reasons not related to laptimes. like view out the windshield, ride quality, turn in feel. the fastest front engine road car on the ring is ranked 10th. Chevy gave up trying to make a front engine design work and went to mid engine on the vette.

I remember when it first came out thinking it was clearly a run at the 911. I am a huge Porsche fan but I do lust after the MB. I think they look a bit like a 911 on steroids (coupe) and I love that they are a lot less common than the 911. MB has serious depreciation issues which is a bit of a concern, but on the other hand you might pick up a great used example for a decent price. Decisions.

Interesting enough, the AMG GT is a mid-engine car, located in the front. And it handles really well, almost pivoting like a rear- mid-engine car. Almost. And the ride quality is a tad harsher than most 911s, but not by much. It rides fine enough over broken pavement.

The biggest issue is visibility. That long hood and lack of rear glass definitely makes the car feel a bit claustrophobic. But I got used to it, adjusted, and was fine barreling through the canyons and LA's mountains, pushing it pretty hard, and only occasionally did I wish I had some better sightlines, mostly in the sharpest of turns.

But yes, if you're going by purely track times, then rear mid-engine is still ideal. Though I'd trade some lap time for the feel and look of the AMG GT (inside and out). And it doesn't take much to make it a stupid fast car, if that's your thing.

And the stock sport exhaust is better than most high-end sports cars, even better than some super cars.

AMG GT also has excellent hydraulic steering (unless they changed it with the refresh). I'm very interested to see what they do with the next GT and SL (which will share a platform).

I went against a regular GT in the standing half mile. He was able to get traction off the line but I was catching up near the end. Never did catch him.

That will be huge if they take the lap record at the ring. Front engine machine taking the reigns from the GT2RS and Aventador SVJ.

My only issue with the BS is that it sounds worse than the regular cross plane V8. Kind of weird although I'm sure the new exhaust/turbo setup and particulate filters are most at fault.

So I'm a Porsche fan and I suspect that Porsche won't let this go unchallenged but for a company that builds according to Properstyle luxury cars for the 60+ crowd that's pretty impressive and maybe MB and the 60+ crowd shouldn't be dismissed so easily.

Agreed, the other GT's with the cross-plane had a lot more aggression to their sound. The BS sound is a pretty big letdown, especially in comparison to previous black series.

Properstyle didn't say the 60+ comment, that was the user he was quoting in his post.

Well, no official time yet, but the 991 GT3 and GT2RS are both several years old now. I have no doubt the new gen cars will beat this if it in fact does set a new record. If they do, props to Merc as the AMG GT is a great car!

AMG GT-R Black Series Sets new Nürburgring Record

Quote:
Mercedes-Benz is hunting for Nürburgring records. The automaker recently claimed a Nordschleife title with its four-door GT63 S as the quickest "luxury class" vehicle, though it's certainly a vague grab at glory since the four-door Jaguar XE Project 8 is still quicker. However, there's nothing vague about this latest record which crowns the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series as the ultimate 'Ring king for production cars.

Admittedly, it's a close margin. The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ ran 6:44.97 for its record run in late 2018. The new AMG GT Black Series went 6:43.61 – a difference of just 1.36 seconds but still more than enough to garner an overall production car record. And the car is indeed production-spec without any special tweaks that Black Series owners can't do themselves.

That's notable, because the AMG GT Black Series offers prolific settings for the suspension. To make this run, Mercedes-AMG engineers dialed in the adjustable coilovers with a 0.2-inch drop in the front and 0.1 inches as the back. 3.8 degrees of negative camber was set at the front with 3.0 degrees at the back, and the adjustable sway bars were set for the hardest settings. Additionally, the driver made use of AMG's nine-stage traction control settings, switching between the sixth and seventh positions depending on the section of the track. Yes, some people might say electronic assist is cheating, but it's part of the production car.

As for tires, the record run was made using Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 MO tires, which are standard equipment for the Black Series. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine was also completely stock, though with 720 horsepower (530 kilowatts) going to the rear tires, the Black Series definitely isn't hurting for power. Interestingly, the mightly Merc has a listed top speed of 202 mph but settings of the aero package kept the maximum speed on the Nordschleife's massive Döttinger Höhe straight to "well over 186 mph." Obviously some flat-out speed was traded for grip in high-speed corners.

The record is even more impressive when you consider the AMG GT's front-engine architecture. In this case, the Black Series is punching way above its category in a sea of mid- and rear-engined competitors. It's the only front-engined production car to break the six-minute barrier, besting the Dodge Viper ACR and its 7:01 time by nearly 20 seconds.

That think is a monster, it seems huge compared to a 911. Good job MB, Porsche, the ball is in your court.

Well, in all fairness, the AMG GT is a mid-engined car, but a front mid. It is impressive to see what they ran but given the GT2RS did it a couple years ago I have no doubt Porsche will soon be beating this time with either the GT3RS or GT2/RS.

GT3 won't get there just due to its lack of power. The next 2RS might however.
