Underdrive and air intake additions : What is bulletproof?
Whats been your full proof, used and abused intake elbow & under drive pulley setups?
Looking to complete the ‘full package’ N/A upgrades, to pair with Akrapovic Evolution on the car. The under drive pulley setup is what I’d like feedback most about. Considering: Dinan, Turner, possibly MS. Have read all reviews on Dinan belts “extreme” tightness. Still left with a question mark, if this is intended (prevent belt slipping off). Or somehow a mixup on Dinan’s part (doubtful). Thanks in advance! |

One possibility of the Dinan UDP being so tight is that most manufacturers rebadge the UDPs on the E60 M5 kits to be used with the S65 since it's essentially the same - just missing 2 cylinders. This is why most S65 UDPs are offered as single pulley kits. Then the task is utilizing what's offered the market for double-sided belts in a 6-rib design. Here's a hint - there's not many, unless you're looking to have them custom made. The Macht Schnell pulleys are designed to use off the shelf belts that are easily available and can be purchased at any auto parts store when replacement is needed.

I've been running MS intake and UDP for several years with no issues. The bump in performance is subtle but paired with my Akra Evo setup really woke the car up. I'm also running Alpine tune which completed the package. The MS parts are easy to install and top notch quality.

I picked up an Afe intake when they did one of their sales, which I believe we might see one for Black Friday shortly.
The power pulley, I found a used ActiveAutowerks that uses their proprietary dual sided belt at $75 a pop. So while I recommend using a powerpulley, I would say thats the only downside to this particular pulley. Reliability issues of either? None.

No pulley here, but have been running the Ms Intake which was already installed on the car when I bought it two years ago. For peace of mind I'm replacing the filter this winter, probably overdue honestly. The MS Pulley seems to be the way to go for ease of ordering belts.

I have the Rouge pulley which I've yet to install but in my hands the part looks great. I'm running the Epic stage 1 tune right now with the plans to eventually go to their stage 2 tune when I do test pipes. Randy said they most commonly use the Rouge and haven't had any kind of issues. If I recall it also uses standard size, common belts.
If I didn't get a deal and was buying new I'd just go MS for all the reasons above. Seems to be the most common and no issues.

I thought the aftermarket air intakes don't really do much, and the OEM design is already very efficient?

I'm sure they help but no one is going to find it a game changer. You usually get more intake sound too so that's a plus. My gut says it's one of those parts that alone barely does anything but when you factor in that most do pulleys, test pipes, etc the basic bolt ons it probably rounds out a solid upgrade.

Many people mistake aftermarket intakes as the airbox only. For the record, the stock airbox is very efficient and most likely likely cannot be improved upon, including materials. However, there are other components of the system that can: - Filter media - Filter Mounting Flange - Intake Charge Pipe For example, here's a comparison of the intake charge pipe (left) vs Macht Schnell (right). The OEM filter mounting flange (not pictured) also has this restriction, a replacement is provided with the MS intake: The MS piece also does not have the "accordion" type bend as seen on the stock charge pipe. A less restrictive flange, larger charge pipe and high-flow filter (along with ICS scoops) all work together as a package, resulting in best hp gains - which is why the entire system is included as a kit. Hope this helps

Question for guys who installed the air scoops - any trouble drilling to get scoops bolted in? Haven't even checked what size drill bit I need. Thanks! |

for my AFE scoops, i don't need to drill anything. Not sure about the MS scoops.
I just got my MS pulley kit few days ago too, can't wait to install them. Now that i have the AFE scoops, AFE intake, turner test pipes, eisenmann race exhaust, and with the MS pulley kit, i can't wait to get a tune after that.

I have installed the MS underdrive pulley kit for years and 0 problems. I have it combined with a technocraft intake and full Akrapovic Evo line system along with the AlexAlpine tune and very happy with the result.
To give you an idea with the dragy I register a 100-200km/h in 9.5s
