camshaft position sensor
For the life of me I can't find a single picture that shows where this is located.
Throwing code for this in bank 1. Just changed throttle actuator for bank 2 and just got oil overfill warning (stupid mech) so wondering if those 2 are related. Changing thermostat today and will drain oil to rule that out. If the sensor does need to be changed I don't know where it is...? THanks |

There are four of them, one for each cam. Two at the front of each valve cover under the plastic coil cover. The fault code tells you which one so you need to look closer at that and not guess.
Cam sensor codes wont have anything to do with overfilling oil or changing an actuator. |

They're in the same location on both banks.
Just go look at your car. For the sake of clarity, RealOem doesn't picture the full quantity of the same part if there are more than one. For example they don't show a picture of all 16 exhaust header nuts, just one. These would need proper diagnosis by a qualified technician with appropriate software. |

I had the exact same issue after doing my valve cover gasket.
I just didn't tighten down the bolt that holds the sensor onto the valve cover. After I tightened it down, the code went away shortly after.

So I changed both sensors, made sure they were seated correctly, cleared code, drove around for 30 min and the code came back. I'm assuming it's the harness that's broken then? Where can I get the harness? TIA

You're throwing parts at it. Have the codes checked by a qualified BMW tech with the proper software. ISTA-D has test modules that work through faults without having to guess at things.

...So Since you have access to ISTA, take the next step to calculate the test plan in the software and work through the diagnosis. Run the VANOS test and take each step the software tells you.
With ISTA, you already have the means to the answer. |
