Civic Type R - m3 replacement?

Hey guys,

Has anyone here actually driven a new Civic Type R?

I am entertaining the idea of selling my 11 zcp 6mt for one as my daily driver. I know the obvious FWD vs RWD difference. Also, the CTR is not exactly attractive, but it’s suppossed to be lots of fun to drive.

I have read great things about it and the MPG is much higher for my 70 mile daily commute. Also, new car warranty and reliability that should be superior after the warranty expires compared to the m3.

I am currently frustrated with my m3, since the HVAC evaporator recently failed and needed replacement which was over $2k and I replaced the TAs and refreshed the brakes among other things shortly after buying my m3. I have not replaced the RBs but know it's a must if I want to thoroughly enjoy the car with worrying about failure each time I rev it to redline. However, I love the sound of the s65 as it sucks down fuel daily. LOL

I found a dealer that will sell the CTR $1k over sticker and my m3 is probably worth $30k max (55k miles). That is $7k plus taxes I need to come out of pocket.

FYI, I do not track my car and just commute and like to have fun at legal speeds. However, I read the CTR would smoke an e90/92 on a road course.

Fun to drive and reliability are my primary goals. Personally, I don’t think the CTR is that bad looking, but compared to the m3 it is ugly.

Unbiased thoughts?

Incredible car from every account I have read. Spanks the STI, Focus RS, 370Z Nismo, etc., on the track and in the highway. But it’s no E9xM3 although it is smoother and more comfortable and gets much better mpg. I’ll keep driving my M3 for now.

With the $7,000 you're willing to spend, get an older Civic, and keep the M3. Having and driving a contrasting car will make you appreciate both.

sell the M3 and get the civic. The m3 is not the car for you.

The CTR is beefy for a Honda. Really did good things with the front suspension.

Smoke an E92 M3? I don't think so. It barely beat an M235i at Streets of Willow and that track favors lighter cars.

The Civic Type R (7min 43s) destroys a regular E92 M3 by 22 seconds on the Ring! It even beats the E92 M3 GTS and M4 by 3-6 seconds. 22 seconds is smoked IMO.

Not saying the CTR isn't faster on the ring, but I think it's worth noting that the CTR was on Sport Cup 2's. Regular E92 M3 was tested on old PS2 tires (at oem undersizing).

Further, I could never trade an E9X M3 for a FWD CTR...Even if it did 7min flat.

Damn! I knew it was good but did not know it was that good. If only it was not so ugly and looking like a car for young people in their 20s.

The CTR is very impressive on the track. I thought I would attend a couple HPDEs in the m3 but never happened. I would expect it to be a lot of fun on the street and significantly more agile than the m3 due to lighter weight and Honda suspension magic.

Agreed the looks are more for a 20 something. The odd looks are the biggest thing that holds me back. Otherwise it's a very impressive hot hatch.

If you like highschool boys humping your leg, get it.

Not interested, I don't care how fast on the ring it is.

There's a type R by me that I run into often. He tries so hard to touch my E90 and fails miserably. A fast track car doesn't equate to much, usually, on the street other than your Pcars and such. I'd never give up any M car for a civic. Seriously. Put any M car in my possession and I'd gladly drive it over any civic.

OP, if you are worried about redlining the E9X you should get rid of it. High revving NA engines... require high revs.

As far as the CTR, I'd prefer a Civic Si. To pay 35k for a CTR, Golf R, whatever seems like an incredible waste of money.

Not directed to the OP: drugs are bad for you. Please get off them.

That Honda was able to put a stiff suspension and sticky tires on an econobox to get a fast lap time shouldn't be surprising.
I look forward to meeting someone at the track who has bought into the hype and see what happens when they face an M3 that also has sticky tires.

I think CTR is a good daily. If you don't track and are not into mini-drag races on the streets, It's actually a MUCH more involved car, has a sense of immediacy to it with a vastly superior shifter and clutch.

Both the amazing cars TBH. you will miss the M3 if you make the switch no matter how good the CTR is. Plus its ugly with the wing - the MMC is supposedly going to bring in a non-winged CTR which would look much better for a daily.

Yea... some magic happened with a momentum car on the ring with a pro driver. These type r's would be dogshit on a local track.

Based on what evidence? It's a fairly sophisticated platform with bespoke suspension -- much more than just a basic Civic with better tires and stiff springs. The M3 is a fantastic track car but it is not the be-all, end-all of track-ready vehicles.

It's my opinion based on how it drives in gran turismo. I'm being "that guy" right now.

OP, I have not driven one. The automotive journalists really like it and say it's a new benchmark in the hot hatch segment. Sure, the styling is kinda funky, but the nice thing is that when you're driving it, you don't have to look at it. ;-)

Best advice I can give you is to go drive it for yourself and go with your gut. I did sit in it at the Chicago Auto Show and I actually liked the interior. Roomy, sporty, and visibility was good. Seats were outstanding.

From an economic perspective, I'm not sure why spending an additional $7,000 solves your problem -- you're complaining about standard maintenance/upkeep on the M3 costing $1-2k, but suddenly you want to drop $7k on a new car?
