Had a 2011 335is when it came out. Loved it.

Got a 2013 M3 non-civic. Love it more.

Both feel fast. They are very similar in straight line speed in very different ways.

The 335is chassis and suspension is where it falls severely short of the M3.

Neither are all that impressive against other performance cars from a standstill so don't expect to be wowed by that. Live above 5000 rpm in the canyons and the M3 will bring you years of joy.

I think you mean "tears" of joy. Either word works in this case though. Definitely letting the motor sing at high rpm is one of the special things about this car. Take it to a track and you'll love it more.

Honestly, I would 've been happy with 335i as well.
Reason I picked the M3 wasn't the track/circuit run. It was because it is NA and high revving engine which corner exceptionally.
My speciality in the street is low speed corner speed. I don't break the speed limit, and enjoy the high performance.

Exactly. I could give a crap whether a car does 150 or 200 mph. It's the acceleration and handling that counts and can be enjoyed at a relatively sane peak velocity. Even at the local track (Sonoma/Infineon/Sears Point), I never exceeded 110 mph with the track set up in "bike mode" with the main straight shortened.

Nah... track driving is really not like what people make it out to be. You aren't racing. You get to drive fast in a safe environment compared to public roads.

And if you don't feel comfortable driving as fast, you can drive it at a slower pace. No worries.

nice!

I've never raced or anything, so excuse my ignorance
so whats the deal, either M3 driver is super good, or 458 driver sucks, or M3 is better for track?

The M3 driver is significantly better than the 458 driver. Most people seem to forget that the best mod you can do is driver mod.

If you want an M3 but don't want to give up the easy city torque, why not get the new car?

458 driver misses the line/apex at most of the slower corner. 458 driver is losing at least 0.1-0.2sec on exiting the corner due to very slow throttle response.

Let's just say, IF the 458 Italia driver is a stupid Fast and Furious drivers who "thinks" he/she knows how to drive, because they beat some Challenger SRT or Civic.
M3 Driver would be a professional FIA GT driver.

It is great to see this kind of post versus the posts that are along the lines of "why would you buy a M3 and not go to the track?" The M3 is great fun to drive at legal speeds - significantly more fun than my 335i - the beauty of this car is the quality of the controls, interaction, and response of the engine.

It's fun around a track too - but so is a 10K Miata - and you don't need track insurance.

Again thanks to all.
I wouldn't worry about all those "purists". I have a CF roof, but I can tell you I would be just as happy with a moonroof from a driving dynamics standpoint 99% of the time. Especially if you never plan to track it. The extra 40lbs on the top of the roof will make a very small difference, but are you really that good to complain about it? Probably not. I sometimes wish I had a moonroof when I'm just cursing down the highway, which is what most of the M3 owners are doing with their cars most of the times. Unless you really want the look/cool factor (like i did) don't be dissuaded by a car that has a moonroof.

completely agree, you don't have to track the m3 to enjoy it.

It was ditched because in 2008-09, BMW decided to focus the company on emissions and efficiency (which they have done very well, winning a bunch of "most green" awards lately). Hmm, bespoke engine that costs a third of what a loaded new car is selling for vs. uptuned/upgraded version of an engine that comes in 10+ models. No brainer.

And the S65 and its derivatives are behind the immense success BMW has been having in DTM and ALMS.

Indeed, some of these key-exchangers include some very highly noted (past) members of the 335 community, like creaminz and Longboarder. As a member of this forum since the beginning, I can attest to the substantial history of this debate.

This history, as the cliche would indicate, has seen many repetitive events. There have been many self-assured and righteous 335 owners aggressively justifying their decision on this forum, only to quietly come back as M3 owners in a year or so. In fact, I even recall you, Killerfish, angrily and vainly arguing with Longboarder over the track superiority of the 335 over M3. It is nice to see you now have wised up, if only partially.

The answer to OP's question is simple. If you can afford an M3 - that is, including all maintenance, fluid replacement, and any desired modifications to achieve a particular performance or aesthetic goal - you should get an M3. If you cannot satisfy that requirement and its concomitant responsibilities, get a 335. There is no real debate beyond this, although seemingly every day another 335 owner insists there is.

That should put an end to his trolling, at least for now.

You know what my favorite thing about the CF roof is? It certainly isn't about the weight savings the data tells me I enjoy yet can't feel. No, I actually like it because everytime I go up and down uneven pavement or into driveways and the like, the car creaks dramatically less than any car I've owned that did have the moonroof option. It may be no more torsionally rigid, however it doesn't have all those parts and panels up there to squeek and creak and rub and bump. Makes me feel like the car is new.

Haha, great vid; never saw it before. 458 driver must have been "wtf? I'm getting 10 car lengths over the back straight, but i'm getting passed?" If i owned an F-car, that would have been painful to watch.

Well as the originator of this post I want to thank everyone for their input.

I went ahead an got a 2013 M3 coupe. Melbourne Red, Black Leather interior and CF roof. Wasn't sure about the color at first and it took me a couple times to look it over. Saw thread about Melbourne Red which helped too. Must say I really do like this color. I have always had white, black or grey cars. It is a great car and so much more than my old 335is.

Again thanks to all.

Congrats! It was bound to happen as I'm sure a lot of us came from a 335i, including myself.

You won't regret getting MR. I too was like you when I bought my New Formula Red S2000 and thought it was too flashy. I fell in love with it and would get it again in red when I buy another one. Point is, red cars grow on you and you will love it way more than the boring white and black.

Enjoy the new ride and don't forget to post pics!
