1400$ to install BBK + mount tires?
I'm having BBKs installed and new tires mounted & balanced. I'm providing the parts (calipers, rotors, pads, lines, tires). The shop quoted me $1400? Does that sound fair for the job? It seems a little high to me. I had expected it to be below $1000. What do you think?
Breakdown: Front Brake Pads & Rotors Labor: $462.30 Rear Brake Pads & Rotors Labor: $444.60 Mount & Balance 4 tires Labor: $218.40 ABS system Brake Fluid Flush Labor: $171.00 Labor 1296.30 Parts 51.44 Haz Waste 0.40 Covid-19 Cleani ng 25.00 Tire Disposal - 4 15.00 Subtotal 1388.14 Tax 4.76 Total $1392.90 Payments 0.00 Bal Due 1392.90

why don't you just do the BBK install yourself? I think the BBK install would take me 2-3 hours. Bleeding is 20 mins. Only thing I would get the shop to do is mount and balance tires which is normally $130ish.
So yea, I think they are ripping you off. |

I'm still waiting for an estimate from other shop, and unable to reach a few others. They are however further located - so its more cost + time for travel.
I usually don't do car part installations unless its something super minor.

It's not that bad. I can probably do it for you for half the price with exception of the tire mounting and balancing. You are more than welcome to watch and learn also. But I won't be back in the bay area until the Nov 20th. What BBK did you end up buying?

Thanks for the offer. I kind of need to have them installed asap as I had my current rear pads shaved already 8 mo ago to allow a little more time until I switch to BBK and have been holding off on bigger drives since then. I got stoptechs

Man, that's an insane price. $500 for BBK install is a rip off in my opinion but I know shops need to make their margins.
It's super easy work and would behoove you to be familiar with the brakes if you're intending to track these. Literally, it's loosening and tightening bolts. The ST kit is plug and play. A pair of tin snips to cut the rotor shields or better yet remove them to avoid rocks and shit from bouncing around when going off track. Folks on here would be happy to help answer any questions if they arise. PM me if needed.

Try a mobile brake guy.. there's a few in my area who seem professional enough. I would imagine San Jose has a few too. My guess is that quote would be different if the shop was providing the brakes. A lot of places will happily do installs for cheap if they're providing the products as they're making $ two ways.
I would expect to pay a mobile guy $600-800 for half a days work in that area.

I don't see it being more than an hour a corner to do for the brakes, plus another hour for alignment and balancing. At those prices that's about $280/hr for something an average mechanic could do. That's pretty insane.

Bay Area labors are very expensive! I think the dealership rate is around $225/hour and a reputable indie shops would be 20%-25%.
Anyhow, I think they are way overcharging you for the job. |

$1400 would buy a set of quickjacks, necessary tools, a cooler full of cold ones, lunch and dinner for two if you can find a buddy to help ya if you're shy to do the job. The stoptechs come with color step by step directions the hardest bit is the rear inner lines which aren't necessary to change really and could be done at a later date. If you do decide to take it on remember to bend the rear dust guards back to clear the new rotors.. no need to ask me how I know that 😉

Yeah that's what my colleague recommended as well. Couldn't reach them, worth trying tomorrow.

Rip-off. As others have said, DIY this in your driveway on some quickjacks or jack stands... It's not that hard.
