X5 4.8is

Not exactly a "vs" thread but seemed like the best place to post this. Considering picking one up for winter driving and more cargo room. Anybody ever own one/have experience to share?

A lot of us have X5's as second/third cars. Why do you want the 4.8?

Try to get one of the newer 3.5's (3.0 turbo) with the ZF 8 speed auto trans. Faster and gets better mileage and are more reliable from what I understand.

Price, style... Just a decent fast SUV at a good price, assuming maintenance is not a nightmare (hence my question.)

Probably best asked in the X5 section as you have a couple people with them here but over there everyone has them.

I have the e70 x5 but in the 3.0. Same vehicle inside. Use it as my daily and hauls decent amount of cargo with back seats down. Stuff wheels and tires in at times to go for balance. Also have a utility trailer for bigger items. Its not exciting to drive particularly but its very comfortable for me as a commuter DD.

Exactly. Its my daily as well but so is my M3 as of late. lol I also have the 3.0. One thing is I love the comfort. Keep in mind that a solid 80% of all E70s radiators fail after 50,000 miles. Keep that in mind.

Also my buddy had a 4.8 and hated it. Drank gas like the M3 and his was always in the shop for electronic issues. He traded it in 10 days ago for a 2013 F30 328 M-sport and never looked back.

Not really all that much better than the 3.0 in performance either.

The 4.8is is a different vehicle......you have a E70 and the 4.8is is a E53. The "is " version is a beast. I had a 4.6is which was the Alpina tuned motor. This was the X5M before there was one. They are a blast to drive and are pretty much bullet proof..........Phil

My bad I was confusing the 4.4 and the 4.8. Sorry for the confusion. Smaller package in the e53 so less utility as far as interior hauling space.

^^^Exactly! [Edit: sorry, meant for Phil] Love the way they look and saw one in MCB, also one in Imola. Just very cool and a friend had one for a short while and loved the performance. Would make a nice tow vehicle...

Spot on about the smaller interior volume. Thing is these trucks are high teens - low 20s in good shape. There was a great deal on an E70 in the classifieds a few weeks ago in the mid-30s IIRC, but missed out on that. Plus, I do like the older style better, especially in "4.8is" form. Just researching reliability among my M3 brethren. Thanks again for the input!

When I was really active on X5world this was the vehicle to have. These SAV's are solid. If you find the right deal jump on it. Head over to Xoutpost and do some homework........Phil

Mid 30s for an e70 is too much I paid low 30s over 2 years ago for a low mileage one. Wait for gas prices to creep and the 4.4 are super cheap.

Really? Interesting. Always had a crush on these cars. I'll have to look into it.

If you don't mind, can you elaborate on your ownership experience? The good and bad.

I owned a 4.4i and this 4.6is for a combined total of 5 years. The only major issue I had was the evaporator in the 4.6is. It was covered by CPO so no worry there. The only other small issue was a valley pan gasket leak but that seemed to be a normal wear item. Tranny was solid on both vehicles.....oh yeah, the 4.6is love to eat rear brakes. But man there was nothing like having all that rear tire on the ground......standard size was a 315-35-20................Phil

Good to know. I have a 97 4Runner that I use as a beater, and was thinking about replacing it with a 3.0 with MT when the 4Runner is too far gone. The thing that scared me about the iS' were the transmissions. Good to know they are solid though. Time to do some research, thanks!
