Very cool! I recently picked up this 08 v8 with a bad steering rack and some other maintenance issues for 5k. With the V8 option, they are definitely one of the best SUVs ever built!
Here's how it looks after a rack, axle, and lift!

Looks good with the lift. The V8s are beasts.
They ride great and I did 175k miles from new and only bought one set of tires.

Is it worth it to buy a PNW one? I love this truck but pieces up here seem inflated

I think it's just the Toyota 4WD SUV market as a whole. They're all holding very steady, or, in some cases sky rocketing. I've got the big brother, an 80 series Land Cruiser. If you want to see wild prices, check into those I'm okay with it, though. I've already got one.

Yep - west coast better as the east coast ones have rusted frames and they still want the same top dollar. I'll pay up for a Toyota but not if it's rusted.

PS - cloth interiors tickle my loins

About 3 years ago, I was looking for a similar 4th Gen 4Runner with V8 when my 2008 Ford Explorer V8 blew it's transmission

I was having difficultly locating decent examples of the 4th Gen 4Runner V8 trucks, but after some research discovered another option: Lexus GX470.

Same exact chassis and running gear as 4Runner, but they all have the bulletproof 4.7 V8 which I preferred given I was towing a medium size camping trailer.

Once I opened up my search, I noticed the majority of GX470's were in very good condition, normally were kid/soccer mom type vehicles with highway miles and rarely driver hard or off road.

I ended up purchasing a well maintained 2005 Lexus GX470 that had high miles but was in good condition and no accidents and all original paint and glass (see below).

Below is an article with some additional details as to why it's a good choice:

https://carbuzz.com/features/first-g...f-road-bargain

Never hurts to have additional options ... good luck!

I was also shopping 06-09s at one point and it seemed like PNW cars were going for a solid 2k higher than ones down in SoCal. That was over five years ago, though. I ended up in a modded '99 Land Cruiser that looked fantastic but I had to get rid of it.

That's a sweet ride, especially in blue. Not giving up yet on the 4R but that's a good option if I come across a clean one.

Thanks for positive words and yes indeed it is holding up very well despite the miles and has been extremely capable for what we need.

If you haven't driven a GX470, I would consider test driving one at a CarMax or similar dealership to gauge your interest. What was surprising to me when driving both was the additional space up front in the GX470 vs. 4Runner; just seemed to be less cramped and have more elbow and head room even with sunroof.

How was yours underneath when you installed the lift kit - a few rusty bolts? I will accept some rust if the price is right.

I was pretty fortunate with this one! Largely the reason I purchased it. One owner, garage kept, and regularly detailed. Almost zero frame rust and the suspension was a very easy swap. Think I did front and rear in about 4 hours. My previous '06 came from the Philadelphia area and was rusted to pieces. The frame literally split. If you're in the market, do yourself a favor and inspect the frame thoroughly before buying.

The gx470 is definitely a great alternative, but not nearly as sporty with its additional weight.

I found a 90k mile 2005 in CO which typically has little rust given super dry air. Ran the car fax and it was 15 years in PA from new, so another PASS. These trucks were not built to last in salt and humid ie NE USA.

I wasn't aware there was any big difference in weight between the two, but some additional research (see below) showed the GX470 is 300+ lbs porkier

I am not sure it makes the 4Runner "sportier", but IMHO I don't consider the additional weight a significant enough reason as to choose one over the other.

My focus would be to choose the best maintained one, specifically using a Carfax for consistent owner history, and PPI to weed out the ones with a lot of rust.

FYI: The Canadian Gearhead website has a great 4th Gen Buyers Guide, and he owns a 4th Gen V8 4Runner and has a lot of good information on mods and maintenance:

The GX470 is a great option. I like the lower roof line and the available cloth seats in the 4R but will start looking at the Lexus as well. Came across a super clean 2008 Taco one owner Carolina truck with 40k miles and 6MT for $18k but no V8 and want the SUV.

Search continues.

FYI ... all the normal caveats apply given I don't know the dealership or this specific GX470, but it's an example of one I would recommend you consider for a PPI based on your price range and the requirements you have mentioned to date.

Carfax shows a minor accident but consistent ownership and maintenance, underbody is relatively clean and you'd get a clearer idea with a PPI:
