Time for rotor replacement?

Using a rotor caliper tool I measured the front rotors. There is a spot that reads 28.45mm. The minimum spec is 28.40. Is it safe to get another track day out of these? Also, my pads (PFC 08) are at 7mm. Do you run them down to 1-2mm?

The rotors are fine for another track day if you're not using a really abrasive pad compound.

For the PFC 08 at 7 mm, you should keep a very close eye on them. I would buy a new set and keep these as a backup. They were 19 mm in the front when new so you've worn 12 mm away. You could probably get away with a day or two if you're on a track that isn't very heavy on braking from high speeds. Also with this level of pad wear, you're more likely to overheat the rest of the braking system.

I think 7 mm is fine. I replace at 2–4 mm. Would recommend having a spare set of pads.

Inspect them carefully for cracks front and back. If there are no cracks, run 'em.

You can run a bit past the "discard" thickness of the rotors, IME. It's not like being fractions of a millimeter below it will completely prevent the car from stopping. You will notice reduced thermal capacity, obviously. As others said, check for cracks big enough to catch a fingernail on or ones that go to the edge.

As far as brake pads, I would not run them down to 1-2mm. At that point you are putting tons of heat into the caliper and fluid. Experience has taught me that anything below 1/2 thickness is when you are starting to take a gamble. I know money doesn't grow on trees, but pads are relatively cheap compared to the time it takes to rebuild a caliper. Ask me how I know...

Every pad I've pulled out recently was ran so far down it was missing pad material from the backing plate. I get my money's worth. One PFC 08 even had a hole through the backing plate.

I appreciate the feedback. I am running two more events this year. Looks like I will be able to run Thunderhill and Sonoma then replace the rotors and pads. There are hairline cracks running through the PFC 08's though. I do get huge brake fade even with brand new SRF fluid after 10-15 minutes into the session at Laguna. I'm looking at some sort of ducting to help. Are the PFC DD rotors a huge upgrade at almost twice the price of OEM?

Yes. The cooling vanes are a huge improvement and it's a true floating rotor.

0.05mm/25.4mm/inch = ~0.002 inches (slightly less than 2 thousandths)

I wear about 1 thousandth per event with PFC08's on stock brakes. Depends on the track, of course, with Laguna being more than 1 thousandth, other tracks less. Your rotor wear may vary.

i'm not affiliated with this seller, but if it was time to replace some $1k rotors, i'd take a serious look at this kit. you're gong to spend the $1k anyways, consider a great kit for just $2,200 more. you'll be able to get away with just the front kit with oem rears for a long time.

For pads, the thinner they are, the FASTER they wear. So don't assume you've gone through X amount of events and only wore away Y mm, so that your Z mm pad will last you so many days.

I start buying spares when they're past 1/2 way mark just in case.

I'm not one to talk done on someone's for sale as unless I feel like they are misrepresenting their item, but that kit looks pretty well seasoned.

-I'm always a bit cautious of kits I don't see often. How hard is it going to be to find a vendor that sells replacement parts?
-how far off is a caliper rebuild on that kit? History is a mystery.
-rotors are almost shot. The slots are almost rubbed through and there are some visible (but normal) cracks.

Rotors and hardware are probably north of $1k for that kit.


Now, the PFC kit, i'd believe them if they told me it was brand new... it looks it. No mysteries.

Yep, I've said that in this forum before. The density of the pad actually changes as it wears. Anything past 1/2 thickness and you are going to notice greatly accelerated wear.

Agree that it's clearly a heavily-used kit. The rotors are basically done, and I'd bet the calipers need a rebuild. I would check prices for the discs and caliper seals/pistons from Brembo. That kit, when new, is $6-8k!

Still, that's a legit race setup and if you're fine with spending the coin to bring it back up to original condition, go for it.

you would be silly not to buy this kit... the final solution to braking. you'll never worry about brakes again. i'm not affiliated with the seller, i but i have the same brakes.
