I am attempting to do this update right now. I have followed all the steps as best as I can figure out. I have the files on my USB but the car is not reading it. I have both the config file and pkgdb folder (with all files) from disc one. Are those the only files that need to be on the USB drive? Does the ignition need to be on to start the process? I have tried multiple ways with no luck. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds to me like the downloaded files are corrupted? I upgraded mine using USB drive and it took the car approx. 30-45 seconds to acknowledge the thumb stick. It did the rest on its own. I had the ignition completely on, but the car was not running. Takes about 45 minutes.

Fly to glory.

The update shouldn't have affected night mode as that's part of the software (operating system) in the CIC, and is stored in a completely separate place than the MAP data.

Those of you that need a link to the ISO's let me know.

Edit: I think I know why your night mode isn't working. Click to the right to get to the options screen, make sure that Night Mode is checked, and then un-check the option for "Traffic conditions/grey maps".

That should bring your night mode back again Let us know if it does the trick.
Thanks Mike. I'll give it a shot and report back.

Update: worked like a charm! Thank you.

Took about two hours from the DVDs, blank version when iDrive restarted, correct version information when car was shut off and restarted.

Its much easier to open the ISO and copy the contents of each disk to 3 separate USB drives OR 3 separate SD cards and a card reader. You might have to plug and unplug the readers when it asks for the next disk, or card. Just swapping the cards doesn't work. You need to reboot the reader so to speak.

Glad it worked

Hey everyone, I'm having issues doing the update.

Heres the steps I took and please let me know what i did wrong.

1. download the .ISO files
2. Plug in an external HD to computer
3. Format external HD to FAT32 format
4. Copy only the config file and the folder within DVD 1 ISO onto the FAT32 formatted HD
5. Plug it in via glove box USB
6. nothing happens

I don't think the glove box USB port has enough power to power a HD. Use a USB drive or flash card with USB reader.

I used two different 8GB flash cards, as shown in my pictures in these thread, and they worked fine. I don't know what you are using to get 8.3GB, but all 3 of the ISOs I downloaded come in below 8GB.

Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 jroback jroback 7.8G May 4 22:32 BMW_NAV_CIC_HIGH_2012_Premium_Disc_1.iso
-rw-rw-r-- 1 jroback jroback 7.3G May 4 21:54 BMW_NAV_CIC_HIGH_2012_Premium_Disc_2.iso

Does anyone know if you can use ONE 8GB USB flash drive and just pull it and transfer disk 2 when the CIC prompts for it?

Install disk one. At prompt for disk 2, go back to PC and erase disk 1 off the usb drive and load disk 2 on it. Now go back to car and run disk 2.

I don't think you can just put the ISO on the drive. Don't know for sure, but opening the ISO, dragging two files, on a FAT32 usb stick is pretty easy, and resulted in a painless install.

Yes, I updated using 3 different thumb sticks. Once it's done with one, it just prompts you to throw the next one in.

I just realized, I did my first disk on a 16GB usb stick, but not on purpose though. I think I just got lucky. I am trying the 1st disk on my Sandisk 8GB Extreme IV CF card. It might be just a little short as well.. sucks if you only have 8GB drives.. time to get a 32GB from amazon for cheap maybe. Always good to have around.

Yep, unfortunately it didn't fit on my 8GB CF or SD card. Guess I lucked out by just using my 16GB card first. Can you plug in your usb HDD into a separate power source?

I ended up going to staples and buying a 16GB SD card for 19 bucks. I actually purchased 3 of them, but only used ONE card. It took me longer because I would have to pull the old card, delete the files, then swap disk 2, then repeat for disk 3. But Im on disk 3 now and Ive been doing this for about 1hr.

PS to ALL:

I got my code from sergej markovic <*****************>

He was quick and easy. Totally legit and very competitive.
