Knocking/fluttering sound at 2.5-3.5k

Hello my names Adam I was wondering if anyone had any information on what this might be, we just replace the rod bearings we were told that there were metallic particles in the filter and I personally have seen them my self I would assume the copper is from the old bearings and the other metallics are from other parts. How ever even after changing the bearing and flushing as much of the metal as we could I still get this noise I have videos and pictures to go along thanks !

Someone posted last week another car that had new bearings installed but not torqued down properly and it nuked the motor.. but that could be entirely different vs yours. But it doesn't look good for your engine just based on what you said.

Yeah haha I know that's what I'm so scared about because I got quoted a new motor for some where around 25k 😂 easy fix for some but not me quite yet , but how ever I will say after the bearings got done there's been no power loss or indicator lights just that fluttering noise I originally took it in for but it seems like the noise may have gotten quieter since they've gotten done still Dosent sound right to my ear 😢 it's odd to me how it'll make it on slow acceleration in gear or out but at idle sounds fine and when it get reved it'll sound fine just at that 2.5 to 3 mark

Check this thread, if it sounds the same you may need a new clutch and flywheel

Agreed that the sound alone could be so many things, but metal Shavings and copper in the oil filter is a red flag right?

No clue how well you can hear it ... if I need to re take it or any clue on what I should do next I'm all ears cause I've had the car for 4 months 😢😢 and I got to take it out 2 meets, and I definitely paid to drive it more than 2/4 months I've owned it haha

Sounds like the flywheel for sure, Try depressing the clutch, that improves it (not as loud) in my MT.. if there was that much play in the engine it would have been 'curtains' already 😆

Thing is with mine the gear change is very notchy and 3rd is blocked sometimes so that confirms it for me... anyway, I'm getting the work done next two weeks.
Will definitely get that looked at next thanks and yes my third gear seemed like it was like that too, I'll keep y'all updated any specific shop in the Dallas ft worth area that I should go to? If not I'll start calling around in the morning !!

I'm also in the DFW area and highly recommend Coulter (deansbimmer) at Mporium up in Mckinney as he specializes in ///Ms and could give you a proper diagnosis.

what were the condition of the engine mounts when you did the RBs? Did you replace them as well?

The engine mounts I got replaced with the rb's at a place called DFW Bimmer which seemed like a repeatable place and I mean they did the rod bearing replacement motor still runs strong just the fluttering noise, that originally came in with and after I had mentioned it I kinda got the vibe he was not wanting to touch it anymore ... making me think either he wasn't comfortable or my car was truly going down the drain but I figured if it was he'd tell me ... 🤷🏽*♂️ he said it was "normal" wear which it probably was cyl #7 i believe was the most worn he said

Yeah exposed copper definitely proves there's wear I just think it's funny how my cars been to 3 "bmw specialists" and they keep trying to tell me it's fine but like any enthusiast we all know the normal sounds our cars make LOL I'm so glad about this shop in McKinney because I've been looking for a actual performance shop that does everything a-z including custom fab work. I'm hopeful again for this car to get fixed once and for all !! Cause before I was at a wall, thanks for everyone's help I'll keep everyone updated I'm going to call today and see if they have room if so she'll be on a flat bead headed to McKinney !

Those bearings looked horrible, glad you got to them when you did. The S65's are a bit of an anomaly among BMW engines. They each have their own personality and sounds. Some are quieter than others, but the S65 is considered a noisy engine to begin with.

There are also BMW specialists, and ///M Specialists. S65's/S85's have a long list of quirks that most bmw "parts changer" shops are unaware of and where a specialist shop becomes advantageous.

Happy to help a local!

First off, how many miles are on the car/motor

Secondly, what year is the car... I'm assuming 08-10?
