Why?....just why?? Why didn’t you call around to any number of shops that can do this? in your state, out of state, this forum would’ve told you. Why didn’t your spidy senses go off when he told you they don’t give estimates?? and why would they ever give you money back??? As soon as they started cutting it up it was a done deal.

But what they do not have a right to do is charge more hours than a job should take due to incompetence. In my line of work (real estate appraisal) the first question I must answer is "am I competent to complete this report"". If I am not, meaning it's out of my county etc... then I must decline the work order. Sadly, I think they should have declined to do the work for you.

Yeah, OP went in for ACM mod...but came out with basically the equivalent of a medical bill after an ER visit where you bust your head open and need stitches.

I would've walked the moment he said that he doesn't give estimates for "custom jobs". It's kind of odd if you think about it. How can a shop not give an estimate for something like this?

The owner's email response says a lot about him and his shop. I think that he clearly doesn't care about retaining you as a future customer, otherwise he would've done something to resolve your issue. I respect your decision to not disclose the shop's name, but moving forward I would take my business elsewhere.

I reached out to them via email. If they don’t attempt reconciliation I will complete a public review.

unless you have the space, tools, experience and time to do this yourself, the people commenting on what it should cost are irrelevent. could you have got it done cheaper elsewhere? sure. did you even ask the price before they took the car to start? nope.. who is to blame? car owner and car owner only. should the shop knock anything off the price because owner felt it was high? nope. should car owner mention shops name specifically? yup.

this is how business is run.

Touché. Shop still sucks though. They could have just Google/Youtube'd this mod.

Instead they billed enough time for someone to receive a college education, build a house, raise a family and then bake muffins to celebrate before doing the actual mod itself.

thats exactly why you got taken for 1200. now some other poor sucker is gonna fall for this when YOU could have warned then, what was the point of posting this at all?
I'm surprised OP is so oblivious to his own personal humiliation repeatedly in this thread.

they could have googled/youtubed it, but that is costing shop time+ tools and skills still to physically do it. OPs fault for not asking what it might cost

Still should not take any reputable shop 13 hrs cause I could YouTube it, and DIY in my garage in probably half the time.

Literally could have bought a cheap welder, grinder, and learned how to splatter weld this together for less than $1,200.

When I had my OEM exhaust mod done, I brought it to a local muffler shop. They haven't had any experience with this mod before, but I printed out the DIY instructions AND had them watch the youtube video of the DIY.

They quoted me $200 to get it done. When I returned, they said they took a little longer but would honor the $200 price.

That is how good business is done. Sorry OP, some of the responsibility falls onto you as well. You need to protect yourself instead of just handing them a blank check and letting them go wild.

It's a tough situation but I hope you get the resolution you need. Good luck
