Gintani exposes BMW S65 Motor Bearings/Blown Motor (Video Inside)

Sorry this took so long, we have been extremely busy at the shop.

As promised here is a video of Paul Walker's Bearing. We also have included the explanation of Drew's (DLSJ5) blown motor.

Thanks for your time, we will try to post some close up pics ASAP.

We hope this clears up some of your questions and concerns.

Why is there irregular wear? On a stock car, are you going to encounter the same issues with lubrication? (i.e., less heat)

Were both of these 2008 motors?

I believe there were some updates to the mid MY2009 engines.

Yes it doesn't matter if the vehicle is stock or supercharged. We have seen this happen on completely stock M3s. Some even with very little mileage. These motors pictured here were both 2008 models.

There was in fact updates to a few components on the newer s65 M3 models. However, The problem has not been completely solved. We have also seen some 2010 models do this and we know of two 2011 models that are at the dealer right now for similar issues. They are both completely stock M3s, one of them is here in California. The other is a customer of ours who had just finished getting his first break in service done and was barely gonna take delivery of his fully paid exhaust system. He called to tell us to hold off on shipping his exhaust system because his motor let go @ 2,xxx miles.

These are just a few cases, there are many more S65 M3 motors that have let go like this around the world.

Great video alex. Quick question, can you describe the ticking sound you experienced before the blown motor (due to bearings, etc...)? Was it loud and VERY audible, or slight? You wouldnt happen to have a video of the sound would you? Thanks!

This has nothing to do with Supercharging your car. This is just a factory problem. We are not trying to scare people away from Forced Induction, just trying to educate them and show why these type of situations occurred.

Great vid and thanks for sharing!

Do you believe that more frequent oil change intervals will have a positive effect?
But hearing that engines are letting go at 2000 miles kinda answers that question I guess haha

It starts off like a quite tick noise, but over time progressively gets louder. The ticking noise is synchronized with the revolution of the crankshaft. Sorry, no vids.

Frequent oil changes on the S65 M3s has a positive effect regardless. It is important for people to understand that the oil in this car thins out very quickly due to excessive oil temps when driven hard. So doing frequent oil changes helps but wont guarantee anything. At the end of the day it just comes down to luck.

Hi Alex, great video and explanation.
It seems like this is a similar problem like on the S54 B32 Engines of the M3 E46.
I remember that my bearings had to be changed only 6 month after taking delivery of my first of 2 E46 M3. Reason was a product recall of M GmbH. I know there where a lot of bearing problems and blown engines of the S54. The owners of these cars here in Germany, who know about the problem, have their bearings revised frequently.
As far as I can recall there was also a coating problem of the bearings in the S54 case.
1. How many miles were on Pauls Engine when you pulled it out?
2. What would you specify as unusual high oil temp?
3. Did you develop different bearings?

Thanks again for sharing

Hi Alex

Thanks for your great information.

I love my stage 3 supercharger and with all the work you guys put into this setup. It's simply just can't be beat.

So for others reading I have about 20,000 km on my stage 3 with very hard driving every weekend one thing I learned is to change you motor oil as much as you can. I change mine every 5000km and so far so good.

I think this is one of those thing where your car will have an issue early on or it won't unless you drive like grandma.

I think due to the nature of the engine (hi hp, hi revving, specific oil req'ts), it will usually have some issue from the factory that afflicts some population of engines. For the most part, it's been pretty small among M cars.
