$5100 for 6/100000k Gold Extended Warranty...

I am coming to the end of my lease, and was thinking of buying the car out and adding an extended warranty. My car is a 2008 M3 Convertible DCT, fully loaded except has 18" wheels. Has 49K miles, but residual is only $37000.

Got a quote for the BMW Extended Vehicle Protection GOLD

Exclusions are:
DCT Clutch Assembly
Radio,CD,Navigation
Convertible Top (except electronics)
Air and Water Leaks
Body parts (mirror, body gaskets, wind or body noise, rust, corrosion)
Wear and Tear Items (including suspension parts and components)

$5100 !?

can add coverage for Nav/CD/Radio for extra $600.

Am I right in thinking this price is out of line?

Any advice appreciated..
thanks in advance!

So basically just the motor and rear end is all that's covered...seems a little high.

Wouldn't be so bad if the dct was covered...they aren't cheap to fix and I believe they normally have to replace the entire unit instead of just clutches...

If the DCT and Nav are exculuded, that's a deal breaker.

I agree- out of line. Grab a E92 2011 M3 if you can with all the equipment you want ( i highly recommend the carbon fiber roof and if you want a convertible then save some $$ and do a 335is- plus, you are buying the last year of BMW's M3 with a fully aspirated scaled down Formula 1 engine and if you check out what Dinan can do for you on after market add ons--fugget about it! Between rolling your windows down when you go under long bridges just to hear your exhaust note, then putting the windows back up and cranking up the 800 watt stereo system! Plus, the M Double Clutch let's you play Formula 1 style with the paddles on the wheel or if you prefer, you can shift it like a standard without the clutch using the center console shifter or just push the shifter over, and drive in automatic and enjoy the music and curves when you can find them! Be sure you get the NEW Michelin Pilot Sport PLUS tires which are the latest and greatest- according to several articles I have read- no drifting though, they are very sticky and you feel every slight move of the wheel. Competition pack. is costly but worth it- in my opinion based on speaking with several hardcore M3 owner's- and the other options are well worth it to! we get one shot and we are all guaranteed the same ticket out...so why not have some fun while you are here? You will look for reasons to drive way out of your way whereas in my '10 VW TDI- though it is fun to drive, it is utilitarian and I come home right away! I think the warranty is to much and you have a chance to grab one of the last M3's with this power plant. The future M3's are going to be turbo'd and even more HP/Torque but they will never give you the slick response and no jarring effect of pressing the gas down like the '11 E92 M3- best wishes in your decision!

Wouldn't it be better to have them CPO it and sell it back to you?

From what I've seen, most dealers are offering a full warranty for $3,500 or less. Hell, BMW's CPO warranty for M cars is about $3,400.

CPO doesn't cover everything either but I'm pretty sure it'll cover the tranny. It'll covere most electronics too. I had a broken folding mirror fixed under CPO on my old X5.

It gets tricky under the hood. My friend got the Mini extended warranty for his Cooper S, but when a plastic oil line busted, it wasn't covered. The part was a few bucks, but the labor for $1,500!! Onyl the metal parts were covered.

i asked, and they said its not allowed. Or maybe they just dont know how. They seemed kind of clueless. They told me that EVERYTHING would be covered under the BMW Gold Extended Warranty, and that I would especially want it because I have a DCT with a convertible top.

I pointed the exclusions out to them in the contract, and they were unaware. I wonder how many of these they have sold to customers who believed the DCT was covered?

that's BS, there's a level above gold, it's called platinum, that's why I started this thread, not a lot of people bought it, but notice the poll and names associated witht the votes, I suggest PMing some of those guys:

They offered me that one too:

Platinum was $600 dollars extra, and covers NAV, RADIO , and CD.
The DCT and convertible top and suspension are still excluded.

I'll check that link out, thanks!

Should be under $4k. also if your car has been fairly reliable, i wouldn't bother. My friend got the extended coverage and even with tranny issues and few other items, it wasn't worth it for him to get it.

At $5k, I would self insure. And at $10k for extended maintenance, DC/NAV coverage and the warranty, I would definitely self insure and pay for my maintenance. If I felt like that was a risk, at $10k, I'd put the $10k and $37k buyout towards a new or used CPO M3 or some other car and have less risk.

Wouldn't it be better to not buy it?

If time comes that something does need repaired just spend the money that you would have spent on the ext warranty to fix?

Plus warranties are a biatch anyways. They always try to find a way to deny and then if there is a mod they'll also deny. Plus you gotta pay a deductible sometimes. Also when you decide you don't want warranty anymore they'll pro rate you back. Plus what if nothing goes wrong with the car?

Just my 2 cents.

I guess one good thing about it is it adds some value for resale.

This. Save that money for the repairs that you MAY eventually need. I would take that gamble...

Im glad i found this thread...I was just about to pull the trigger. Im also waiting on a reply back from the rep asking is there a way that this warranty can take effect IMMEDIATELY after my factory warranty and if there is a mileage restriction where i must purchase the warranty before. It make no since to get the warranty now, when my car is only 9months old...

that quote is very reasonable imo. it covers everything except nav basically.
