Engine Squeak - which pulley? Please help!
Few weeks ago, I noticed a squeak at cold start - went away as car got up to temp. Over the past few days, it continues to squeak at varying levels even when car is up to temp.
Under the hood, I notice a loose pulley and it seems like that’s where it’s coming from. Any ideas? Is this the AC or power steering pulley? If it is in fact the AC pulley, can someone provide me with the OEM part number, please? I believe it's pulley 2 (AC pulley) in the diagram. |

The AC compressor clutch pulley would not be my first guess but maybe. I’d first suspect a tensioner or idler pulley. With a $10 mechanic stethoscope and extension from HF, you might be able to pinpoint it. If your car is old or high mileage, you might want to replace them all and the belt. Some replace the tensioner assemblies as well but I don’t think they go bad as soon as the pulleys. If you pull the fan and remove the belt you maybe able to spin the pulleys and hear a more gravelly ticking from one with a worn bearing but it is a bit of work to do that just for a test and you might want to replace them all and the belt at the same time.

For those looking for a solution if you ever run into the same problem - had the issue diagnosed by a few shops around my area as well as AC specialists. The consensus was that the pulley itself was the cause of the squeak, however, the pulley itself could not be replaced because not only is it part of the compressor but also even if it were replaced, the wobble wouldn't go away because the pulley's bearing inside the compressor was going bad. The solution: a new AC compressor.
