The electronic meter in our E9X M3 only shows the measurement of the last quart of oil, not the entire oil capacity in the car.

So...8.5 Liters deep, still getting oil too low T___T

I'll just wait it out. I'm not leaking oil and everything is tight. I'm sure it'll catch up after a few more hours of driving.

grumble grumble give me a fucking dipstick grumble grumble

Correct.

The S65 holds 9.3 Quarts or 8.8 Litres of oil at max operating capacity.

When your oil shows at the top of the range (max line) in the iDrive, you can assume you have max oil and should definitely not add anymore. When you are at the bottom of the range line (min line) you are in essence down one quart/litre or so and it's probably ok to add the full bottle. You can get see red if you go too long on the minimum line and it will go from saying "add one qt of oil" to "add one qt of oil immediately" or something like that.

If you're above the minimum line you should add oil in increments and drive around and let it register a real reading for capacity. For as hyper sensitive as the sensor is designed to be, I sometimes feel like it's sending a me a 3 week old telegram of how much oil I had in my tank back in Q4 2014.

Yep, been adding .25 of a liter every time I check and it's come up the same. I'm just gonna wait until I go for the next .25 because I may end up going over. I'm +1 with you on the readings being not as sensitive.

I've seen the red oil message once. I kept driving for 2000-5000 more miles. No problem whatsoever. Oil expands when hot. It's science, my man.

Side note: My bearings are perfect. I paid a tech to take apart my block and verify, but not replace.

i'm curious since lots of people have had a hard time with this and i haven't; has anyone kept an eye on the indicator and added a quart when it actually asked for a quart with ill effects or error messages?

Or is it the driver that's "retarded." I didn't even know people still talked that way.

lol at this thread. The oil level indicator says the oil is within the specified range so OP adds oil anyway and then calls the car retarded for telling him it is overfilled.

Trusting the sensor to be accurate as finicky as it is could be foolish.

If it shows a 1/2 quart/liter low, and I add 1/2 a quart/liter, and it still shows 1/2 low after plenty of miles, it was actually more than 1/2 low wasn't it? Add another 1/4 and it can register full from 1/2 previously. Finicky and unreliable.

I add a little starting when it goes down 1/4 back to full.

BTW. Then comes MAX, and then comes OVERFILLED.

1/4 low can be 3/4 low. TIME TO ADD ONE QUART CAN BE MORE THAN ONE QUART LOW.
