Thoughts on trading an E92 for E90
Hi all,
As happens with life we are planning to grow our family over the next couple of years. I currently have an E92 M3 which is fine when we need to take our baby in it although you have to be a bit of a contortionist to get him in the back. We also have an X1 as a family car but reality is there are times where we have to use my car. Looking ahead I dont know how practical an E92 will be if there are two kids so the idea occurred to me that I could potentially trade it for an E90 which seems to be a lot more kid friendly. I was wondering what the forums thoughts are on this, is it worth it? Should I just sell the E92 down the track instead? Would it be logistically impossible to find a fair trade? Has anyone done this before?

With the E90, you might find it easier to load 2 kids in. But the biggest problem is still boot space. I think you might struggle if you are traveling with family of 4 in the car.
But if the M3 is a weekend car. I reckon you might as well keep it.

Thanks for the reply, I didn't even think about boot space, is the E90 less than the E92? As funnily I can fit more in the boot of the E92 than the X1!
We would definitely not use the car for trips just the occasional day when the X1 is off the road or if the missus's car is being used for something else. but even then I cant see fitting two kids in the back of an E92 as possible.

good advise. I got the wife and 2 kids an SQ5 (that I could drive too without feeling "slow") and got myself the e92 for the weekends. I think small SUVs like X1 are a waste with kids, need minimum mid-sized SUV to be practical.

I have an e92 335 and an a 5 month old. We only use the car on weekends and trips away. Whilst 4 doors would make things more comfortable it's not a dealbreaker for us but i can see how it would be for others.

Funny. I see so many ads of M3s for sale saying something along the lines of growing family. I have a 2 year old and 5 year old and just bought my E90 M3. The boot is actually quite large. As said before, it would be tight on trips with all of the baby stuff, but it is a great dad- mobile if you have a larger car to run interference when required. We have an MDX for most kid duty and F250 crew cab long box for real trips.

Many good comments here including the issue of boot space and the option of a SQ5. The question of coupe vs. sedan is very much a personal preference and I wouldn't argue with anyone who prefers one over the other. I acknowledge the E92 is much more popular which is why there are more of them. However I think the E90 is better is every respect including practicality, good looks and if you believe Chris Harris handling as well.
So if you think you will want to own an E9x for many years to come (when the kids are bigger and need easy access to the back seat), maybe consider switching to an E90 now. However if you think you'll want to move on to something other than an E9x M3 in a few years, you may as well stick with the E92 while it still works for a very young family. At least you know the history of your own car and you won't lose any money on the changeover. One more thing. I you want a DCT then you'll be spoilt for choices. If you want a manual, you might be looking for a while to find the right E90. |

Leaning into the back of a coupe - will wear you down.
E90 works for me and my family. You are not going to fit a double pram in the boot with tonnes of kiddy crap, but it is sufficient for most tasks. Split fold rear seat is useless with baby seats though. Go for Isofix all the way with the baby seats!! Just make sure ur second car is an suv as the guys have mentioned. E90 will be fine for most things... |
