Rod bearing issue thread not common in real life?

Hello everyone,

Been a previous E9X owner and now driving 340i with full m performance kit. Still cant forget the feeling of E series, just awesome and incomparable, so decided to get a M3 as a weekend car.

I have done many researches about S65. Seems rod bearing is the main concern all over the world. However in our local forum I haven't seen many threads discussing this. Think about the past, when N54 high pressure fuel pump issue was everywhere on the forum. This time when I browsed S65 rod bearing issue I don't see many thread from local owner.

So, has most of us here not having this issue?

I am replacing mine soon and think many others on here have replaced (having read posts saying as much).

You may or may not have an issue if you dont change them. So its really up to you. Some have replaced and the old ones where fine and some not.

I replaced Mine at 70,000 kms. Some bearings had warn through the top coating exposing the copper. Its up to you if you want to change them, after seeing my original bearings I was glad to have changed mine.

I had mine done at 78,000 kms on my 2008 E92 M3. The wear was thru to the copper on all of the shells. It was worth dollars I spent imo.

Had mine done last week, didn't have anywhere near as bad wear as above but enough to make me glad I did them.

It's a cheap bit of insurance, more info/links in here if you are interested in a short read - http://www.diagnostichaus.com/2016/0...-bearings.html

$2.5-3k now and not worry.

or potentially $15k+ motor replacement later on, plus the stress or not knowing if or when it will go.

You choose.

Exactly. Just spend the cash and get it done! I'd say from the many examples posted here that 95% of the bearings pulled are in rough shape.

wow so many replies you guys are awesome! I actually read about 30 pages on our local forum searching anything regarding RB
Any idea how many miles the new bearing will last for? I guess new bearing everyone replaced here is the VAC coated one?

Thanks in advance

I am using VAC and Arp bolts.

I dont think you will find a definitive answer, other than the installation process of the oem bolts is so intensive that there is a risk of issue due to that.

There seems to be varying opinions between Vac, Be and the Wpc oem. So they are all probably fine.

Well they shouldn't have huge gouges taken out of them (the goldy bits). They should have a uniform surface appearance, and there shouldn't be signs of wear.

For the purpose of the above queries, mine were replaced with VAC & ARP bits.

Many people on original bearings with over 100k miles or 150k kms who have no issues. But everyone who does them says how glad they are that they did it. Personally I'd do some used oil analysis and monitor it before forking out $4k unnecessarily.

Maybe the engine is not correctly designed to rev to 8k ? , I don"t rev past 5k with my S65 until I have the bearings looked at and changed , hopping this will work or help until i book it in ! Mine is the 2009 model and from what I have been told a oil test will not work because of the bearing metals where changed and metals in them don"t show up when they have wear ?

I literally picked mine up yesterday.
84k, dct, conservative driver.
Pics below.
Done by Alistair at Bromspec. Excellent.
Struggling to post pics here but wear is similar to others here.

Get it done.
