Whistle sound while accelerating

Hi guys,

I have been hearing a whistling sound while accelerateing. This mainly happens in fourth gear under 4k rpm. It almost sound like a wire ground issues.

Any thoughts?

And no I don't have a super charger before you jokers chime in.

Does it sound like its coming from the rear of the car, drivetrain/differential etc.
Or from engine bay/intake?

The sounds seems to be coming from the engine bay.

I have been researching this my self before I bring in my car to the stealers, and it could be anything from the heat shield being loose to a problem with the differential.

What gear and rpm do you notice it? I mainly notice it in 4th through 6th gear under 4K rpm. It also depends on my throttle position, and if I coast I don't hear it.

I have a faint whistle as well...around 2-4K rpms, I thought it was my actuators because noise started before one of them died, but after getting it fixed theres still a faint whistle...i just assume its normal as the car gets older. How many miles does your M have? im at 36K

Check that undertray crap on the car. Mine was cracked and was creating a wind sail under the car. Not so good at 150MPH coming up to a 90 degree turn.

To me it sounds like it's coming from the rear diff area only under load.

I installed an active autowerke filter last week and I'm getting a whistle too, at low rpms 1500-2500. This definitely started right after I installed it. Is this normal? At first I thought it was but now I'm thinking there may be something going on. I made sure that the air filter didn't have any gaps, now I'm thinking it may have moved or maybe it's normal?

Ended up swapping to AFE Setup. Definitely less whistle. Swapping back to the autowerks one next week and will investigate further.
