Michelin Pilot Sport 4S backordered everywhere
I bought a set of pilot 4s last month but for the second time there has been a delay. Now it looks like they won't be here until next month at the earliest.
I was really looking forward to this tire but I can't really wait another month. Any suggestions on a something comparable? |

There's tons of good alternatives:
The Continental Extreme Contact Sport is the closest direct competitor. Bridgestone Potenza Sport Yokohama Advan V601 Pirelli PZ4 There's a few others from other brands as well. I ran a few sets of PS4S (on my M3 and on my daily commuter) and then changed to others. Never looked back. Some are more comfortable like the Pirelli PZ4, some are sportier like the Advan V601, some are mostly equivalent like the Continental ECS... depends what you want. I found the PS4S soft and mushy so I went with the V601 when it was time for replacement on my daily driver. It transformed the car with super direct feedback and sharp steering. Slight increase in road noise and the ride is stiffer but I feel it is worth the increase in sporty handling.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Tire Rack is saying 7/1/2022
Note: I got a set of 4 last summer for about $1300, so prices are not too insane. I certainly love the PS4S, but I would not wait, I'd probably lean towards the Conti ExtremeContact Sport. Quote:

So given the history of the SX MXX3, PS1, PS2, PSS, PS4S, etc, it's right on que that the PS5S (or whatever it will be called) should be on the market already or very soon. (side note: the PS5 which has already been announced is a replacement for the PS4; not to be confused with the PS4S and its upcoming replacement. Neither the PS4 or the new PS5 are designed for the North America market and aren't generally available or marketed here.)

PS5S is the real replacement for PS4S. The less performant PS5 replaces PS4.

Unless somewhere has physical stock (from last season), these are back ordered in pretty much every size.
The back order is from Michelin themselves, so regardless of the supplier it makes no difference. You'll only find some if there is carry-over stock from last year. |

I can't help but think of 1986 when I bought a fellow club member's track car (E21 320i) as my daily driver/beater, and I installed new tires on it. Bridgestone RE-71. (195/60-14! lol). Somehow Bridgestone has been able to use that nomenclature for decades now, and the market isn't the least bit confused that it is continually updated (although currently they've evolved to the RE-71R and now RE-71RS, so...kind of makes you wonder if they've painted themselves into a corner with the RS). Would the market understand the same about Michelin's top performance street tire if they simply stuck with one name? For example, Pilot Super Sport was a great tire name. What if they'd just stuck with that name forever more and simply come out with new/better versions of it through time? I can't help but think people would understand, like other brands, that new/improved versions of the tire are released. Or simply do like Conti and increment the name cleanly with a number, and create a Pilot Super Sport 3, Pilot Super Sport 4, Pilot Super Sport 5, etc. Instead they've created confusion, world-wide, over PS4 versus PS4S, PS5 versus PS5S?... I do understand the branding issue at a deep level having been through that with other products ages ago in a very large corporate environment (computers not tires, actually printers to be specific). Having the product planning team battling the marketing team with both wooing the industrial design team and all of them battling common sense was a none too often experience. I think of that experience every time I see the "4" font size and placement on a PS4S sidewall (and I've got three cars all with PS4S on them!).

Recall for a moment the genesis and heritage of their max performance summer tire product line: Pilot MXX, Pilot MXX2, Pilot MXX3, Pilot Sport, Pilot Sport PS2 (it was here the redundancy crept in with the PS abbreviation after the product name itself - since PS stands for Pilot Sport), Pilot Super Sport (PS redundancy abbreviation removed), Pilot Sport 4S (partial abbreviation redundancy reappears since the letter S stands for Sport). Now I happen to know the identity of the Frenchman who pushed inside the corporate machine for the PS4S alphanumeric word salad to continue for the big brother product, after the name Pilot Super Sport was retired, since the little brother product line was having great success in the EU. That little brother EU product was called Pilot Sport 3. The competing big brother product naming strategy -> that made more sense on this side of the pond <- was; "replace Pilot Super Sport with the name "Pilot Ultra Sport" and let the EU move to the next little brother product name = "Pilot Sport 4". Well the above "Ultra Sport" naming convention never happened for the big brother product. Why? Because B.F. Goodrich were already thinking about the product name g-Force Ultra Sport - and that never happened either. Oh well. That's water under the bridge now. The EU got a naming convention that made sense to the French, complete with abbreviation redundancy. Example: Pilot Sport 4S means Pilot Sport 4 Sport. Huh - Sport is sorta' in the name twice? When the big brother 4S product could have just been called Pilot Ultra Sport or something similar. I rest my case. Navigating the halls of the corporate machine, and trying to move its direction, especially a foreign one, is like pushing on a cruise ship with one finger. It may move ever so slowly, and take years to change direction, or sometimes not at all. By the way, it's not just Michelin. There are other tire companies using similar alphanumeric word salad product names. To me the names below make more sense: Pilot Sport Pilot Super Sport Pilot Ultra Sport etc. etc. https://dilbert.com/search_results?terms=marketing .

The only people who care about tire naming is enthusiasts. Normal people go to the store when their tires are bald and buy the tires for their size from a brand they know. Maybe they had a Michelin MXV4 and like it, they'll buy another one or a MXV5 when it is out because they remember the 4 was good... or they'll just buy whatever is on sale at that time. And tire places, even tire rack, sell 99% of their tires to these people compared to the 1% of summer performance tires to enthusiasts.
