Yes, this is true - BMW switched to water based paint awhile ago - at least as far as the E46 cars, if not earlier. I read a detailed article/explanation about it.

That may be true for a $2k 318i rattlebox, perhaps people can expect a little more for $60-70,000?

What kind of helpful info about your paint can you get here ? I want to see him coming to the dealer and telling them that some guy on the forum told him that is it not normal !
My dealer only has one Jerez M3 and it's not sitting in the showroom - it would be pretty hard to show up, compare and complain about it.

Which is why I was wondering if any owners have noticed exagerated orange peel on the darker colors (IB and JB), compared to the lighter colors.

I thought this is exactly what these forums are supposed to be about - discussing cars and asking questions. But, do feel free to take it out on me - I don't own an M3 yet, I'm just a lowly 335i owner.

you don't have to necessarily compare it to another M3 ... BMW factory uses the same painting robots to paint M3s, 335s, and all other cars ...

yes you can discuss cars here and all the issues that you have , but I honestly don't think any BMW dealership or BMW of NA for that matter going to reimburse you for having orange peel on your car ... and they definitely not going to lemon that car ...

So ... this thread is pointless ...

We're having the M3 wets-anded. Our quote was $750.

Sure. Orange peel increases the drag coefficient. That probably knocks about .0001 seconds off of your 0 - 60 time.

Just the opposite. Civics don't have orange peel.

BTW, I think $750 to wet sand it is not too bad. It's the word "sand" that scares me.

Look closely at your paint and you will notice the texture is similar to that of an orange.

I went over my MR with a fine tooth comb and I have to say I have no orange peel.

Then again these cars cost $200k fully optioned up here in Australia so they maybe paying a little more attention to the paintwork, who knows? but if it did have orange peel I would not have accepted it, not at $200k
