Whirling Noise @ Oil Filter Housing.... Anyone?

Per the Title.... Have a whirling noise coming from the Oil Filter Housing area. It's like a whirl, whirl, whirl and keeps cycling in/out not quite a constant noise while the car sits at idle. If you blip the throttle it goes away but comes back instantly when the rpm drops back to idle.

I did just change the oil right after the noise started and didn't see anything issues with the cap, used filter or in the bottom of the housing that I could see when doing the oil change... Nothing out of place....

Little stumped, anyone else had the noise or have any idea's?

Does this happen if the car is already warmed up?

The reason I ask is that most cars run in bypass mode when they are cold, meaning the oil filter is effectively not used. Might be the source of the noise.

The oil filter is not bypassed when the car is cold. That would be a terrible design flaw.

There's a thermostat that keeps the cooler in bypass mode. There's a small amount of flow, but not much. Oil NEVER bypasses the filter.

Umm, tons of cars will go into bypass mode when cold, Mike. This is nothing new. I don't know if our cars do it but I suspect they do. This is only for very brief periods. If the oil chemistry and filter are doing their jobs, this shouldn't really cause much harm (if any).

I'm not referring to other cars.

It bypasses when cold, when any and all debris in the engine have settled and are drawn into the oil pump and circulated through the engine? Sounds like a great way to induce premature failure.

The noise is caused by the deflection pulley that sits beneath/to the right of the oil filter housing. You need to replace the pulley. It is a pretty simple DIY. You just need to pull the radiator fan out, release tension on the belt, then unbolt old/rebolt new pulley. I had the same issue a few weeks ago (identical sound and placement) and this fixed it. If you have a mechanics stethoscope, you can verify by touching near the pulley...but be careful of the moving belts when you do. Bringing back this old thread. I have the same issue.

Can someone else confirm this, if it is actually the pulley ?

I’ll probably do everything including ofhg if this needs to be replaced.

Your saying that you have the same problems? And it’s your pulley?

Or you think it sounds like a pulley?

I just read that the bearing I recently had installed actually can increase oil pressure. Which would clearly make sense on this situation.

time ago have the similar noise and its the idle pulley.. sound rattle… take a video with more rpm.. and without fan..

I can confirm this. Had a slight whine and while trying to figure out where it was coming from, I could head a whirling noise from the oil filter housing (using the long screwdriver method). Changed the deflection pulley and the whine is gone and the whirling noise is reduced by 90%. My car is a 2013 with 26k mikes. Oddly, my previous e92 M3, MY2008 did not have this issue even with 78k miles when I sold it.

Here’s a video with the belt and fan removed.

I’m replacing the MAP sensor. I think the sound could be air injection pump. Since that’s what ISTA recommended.

So I have this same noise, followed this thread and replaced the idler pulley. It’s still there. It really sounds like it’s coming out of the oil filter housing.

It is a loud buzzing on cold start and then it gets quieter as the car reaches temp. Even at operating temp it can still be heard but it’s pretty faint.

Anyone solve this?

Hello. Did anyone solved this? I have the same issue in my 325i N52.

The noise is not always the same; when cold, it appears 30 seconds after the engine starts and once it is warmed it gets quieter, but normally it stills there...

NOTES: The noise stills even with the belt off. No DME Errors detected with INPA/ISTA.
