It's kind of like pumping up a bike tire. If you press it repeatedly very quickly, it gives you a little more power each time. Don't push it too many times - your engine will pop!

By the way, the F3x M3 is rumored to have both a POWER and a TORQUE button. The POWER button will still just be for throttle response, while the TORQUE button is rumored to sharpen the brake pedal response. I know it doesn't make much sense, but BMW believes that M customers want a sharper brake that sends your head in the wheel and spills your wife's coffee if you just barely touch it (or even just look at it funny).

The only way you can remotely link this button function to "power" is if you keep your foot steady while driving then turn it on, the car pulls faster as if you pushed a nitrous button or something. I fool my GF and others when I do this convincing them that it adds power!!
Just having fun with the fake name.

No, it doesn't. M button loads suspension, traction and engine settings, which can change yourself. You can set in M Drive how aggressively or gently is your M Car. Impact on engine performance is set to "Power", but it doesn't give you extra power. If you set Power on Sport Plus the nozzle will react more quickly when you press accelerate pedal. If you floor it on Sport / Sport Plus - no difference. I drove ///M V8 and ///M V10, I found out about this. To prove I leave a few video clips of drive without M or Sport Plus (Power):

M3 E92 6MT - It's ECU tune, but doesn't diffrent on M Drive settings. 340 km/h (speedo).

M5 E60 - My friend drove it 2 years ago on highway:

340 km/h speedo

330 km/h speedo (slower, becouse he hasn't free left lane)

how many miles on the E60 and how many on the E90?

Age can play a factor.

My guess - it was called "Sport" on the E46 and your average person didn't know WTF it did. When the M5/M6 were introduced the button was called "Power" since it meant switching from P400 to P500. Someone in marketing probably thught it was a good idea to rename the button "Power" on the E9x M3.

I have a question that is a bit off topic. Does anyone else feel the ride is stiff when the M button is pushed (all settings to max), but the EDC is still on comfort? When M button is not pressed and EDC is on comfort, the ride is more comfortable. Anyone notice this?

Most likely that's your steering effort increasing, giving you the impression the car is stiffer (but it's actually entirely unrelated to the dampers)

Yes.

Thottle position with no gas pedal pressure and with the pedal floored are the same whether the button is on or off. It is how the throttle position maps to all the gas pedal positions in between that varies with each "power" setting. For a (hypothetical) example, imagine a graph with a straigh line and a curved line that start and end at the same point.

Your BMI and BO plays a great deal on power level your car outputs, that's why there are sensors in the seats.

I refuse to believe this! Here's a pic of my car after I press the power button.

Time for some real visual info and clairification:

Pressing the power button does not add ANY horsepower. Not even one.

However, it does change the throttle mapping which causes the throttles to open much sooner/quicker, due to the steep throttle climb in the sport throttle map. This gives the impression of more power (and in a sense, it actually is). Imagine the car thinking that you pressed the gas down further than you really did.

Ironically, in the code, the values for sport throttle are higher in some areas than the values for normal throttle. That could potentially mean that it may generate slightly more HP. I'll have to leave it at that.

Here is a picture so you guys can actually see the real difference between throttle and sport modes in the stock programming.

You might also notice why a tune would seriously benefit the way the car performs in terms of smoothness and drivability. Many of my customers absolutely love the apparent enhancements to power delivery (more linear and smoother over stock), aside from the other great benefits the tune has.

I also noticed that engine braking is sharper with the power button on, which I like it a lot.
