Subscribed. Interested in something like this. Very impressed by what you've been doing here.

Question though, as I was following another valve project that I think was kind of like this. I was just wondering how long is the lifetime of the Race Ready valves in a situation like this. As time and heat goes by, I would think that the motors would go bad? And how hard/costly would it be to replace those once they reach the end of their lifetime?

Thanks in advance, I don't know much about those motorized valves.

It appears that the valves are not super reliable, but I bought what research tells me is the best ones with the best warranty. I am impressed with the build quality, they are not flimsy and they've thought about the gasket at the valve, etc. They are nice. We originally wanted to put the valves inside but soon realized it wouldn't be practical should one of the valves go bad.

As it stands now, if one fails, I just reach under, undo three bolts and the connector, and it comes right off. Replacement will be easy - no need to even jack the car up.

[UPDATE: RRP valves suck! I've been through two sets already - waiting a month for replacements each time. I would not buy them again..]

No wonder this thing weighs a ton with double walls and stuff. We could stand on it and jump up and down when I removed mine.

Nice project SubwOOer!

We ARE looking forward to that clip you know...

P.S. You should remane this thread to something that is representative of your project. I just kind of ran into it. Would have looked at it earlier if the title was more descriptive.

Thanks guys. I'll definitely be posting vids in here. I'll record it in high quality later for all to see/hear. Be patient though, thats probably 3-4 weeks away. We only have one day a week or so to work on it, and we are taking our time to make sure its perfect.

I think we should name this exhaust the "Bates Exhaust" in honor of the guy welding it up, Sam Bates.

Lucid, can you rename this thread for me? I think I tried, but it renamed my post only or something?! Can you title it: "Bates Prototype Exhaust - Custom OEM Exhaust with Valves". I'm glad you mentioned this, it is sort of a buried and non-descript title.

Stay tuned, we're planning on working on it more tomorrow.

I think it will be a 2-3 week wait till the first set comes back from R&D. Cyba will send them to me, and you'll see them here first on this custom exhaust! (I'm his beta tester). BTW, Cyba had Ti ones made with blued tips, but the quality was not perfect from the manufacturer, so we are going the black tip route. They will be black chrome, so that should look really nice against my IB. The style should be similar to oem and double-walled. I'm looking forward to seeing them installed.

It wont sound like a CGT, but I am hoping it accentuates that European raspiness that I can faintly hear when the M3 pulls away. I'm also hoping that its gets quite a bit louder when the valves are open with no change when they are closed. I'm looking forward to playing with them 1/2 or 1/4 open.

BTW, I have been thinking about where to put the switch. I've decided to use a oem headlight switch assembly to control them. I'm looking at the wireless remote for the valves now and it looks to me like its close to the right size for the two blank buttons on the right of the headlight switch.

I'm going to embed the wireless remote inside the headlight switch such that the two blank buttons control the valves; open (top blank) and closed (bottom blank). I may fab up some custom vinyl stickers for the buttons, but keeping it totally stock works too to be stealthy.

It looks like an extra oem headlight switch assembly costs $110. Maybe someone that upgraded would want to sell me one thats already upgraded with the fog light mod!?

Cool project!

You know, that is how Dinan got started....taking stock exhausts, modifying them, putting his plaque on them, then selling them back to the public for a huge price increase. lol. You may be the next Dinan. lol

Great project though. I am looking forward to the finished prototype!

I didn't know that about Dinan; very cool. Yunno, we do feel a little like a startup with this project.
