S65 max oil

I have a oil drain plug leak so I add oil over time to maintain the bar at the middle line. Recently I checked my oil to see if I needed to add more but it says max oil, is this a sensor issue? Or other possible problems

Yes I'm planning to do a full fluid change, bushing, motor mounts, rod bearings, and fixing that leak all together once I get a few thousand miles on this oil first

The oil sensor is notorious for being slow to read actual oil levels. When you see "MAX" check the control messages to make sure that its not overfilled. It can sometimes just mean you have filled to the top of the range and it settles a bit shortly after driving around. Its not an issue to fix unless the control message says engine is overfilled.

If you see a message about it being overfilled, that is when you would have to take action to drain a little, most easily, from the oil filter area.

If you have an oil drain plug leak, wouldn't it be easier to replace the drain plug? It's 5 dollars at most.

90% chance the screw thread is damaged.

Yes it does. I've personally seen "Oil Level Too High" at least on cars with iDrive before.

Good choice. I ran into the same problem. Bought the M, did an oil change and found the drain to be stripped. Perfect excuse to do all of the above. Go with BE bearings

My temporary drain plug leak fix was a butterfly valve, you can find them at any local auto parts store. Fix for the 1000$ new pan was a heli coil. No more leak.

Good luck!

1) couldn't be more false

2) not sure why you'd respond to a thread only pertaining to an M engine with information about a non-M car.

max.pdf Just so you can see what I am talking about, here's a screen shot of overfill in the control menu. If I saw this after driving very gingerly and then restarting the car, I would be opening the oil filter area to remove some oil. I've seen this message just after filling 8.5 qts knowing it was not overfull and after driving around the block it went away. The sensor is very touchy.

Max fill is fine. Min level is also fine. Every car has a range of about 1L that the engine can safely operate at. Only above and below those is when action needs to be taken. It is a good idea to add 1/2 liter or so when you reach minimum to ensure it doesn't drop below minimum.

So no, max isn't a sensor issue or other issues. It is a proper accurate reading.

I would've never thought BMW adds a different oil level sensor for the M3...

Many owners who have a stripped oil pan drain plug would use a time-sert to successfully repair it.

The exclamation point in the diamond symbol means you have control messages. Check there to see if it shows overfull. Nice mileage btw.
