Nice, balanced report.

I own the 6MT, but I've driven the DCT at the PC and Virginia International Raceway. I autocross my 6MT and the 2d gear gearing, combined with my 4.10 final drive, is the primary reason that I chose the 6MT. For track and most street driving the DCT is superior in performance and about as involving for those that drive as you describe.

Both are great options and we get to pick whichever we like better it is a great thing IMO.

I find there are so many biases in opinions (DCT owners feeling the need to defend their transmission from ridicule by 6MT owners and 6MT owners basing the size of their e-peen on a clutch pedal) that it makes it hard, if not impossible, to have a decent discussion on the matter. Glad there are 6MT guys out there like you that are smart and unbiased enough to be able to appreciate both trannies.

Funny, though. I'm considering dropping my DCT to go to 6MT because I find it a bit un-involving during my daily driving. And no... it's never on D.

I think you are just getting bored period First you were looking to change to a 1M, now maybe a 6MT... I just think you are looking for a change and bored. I know the feeling as I get that way with cars too.

P.S. I bet you a $100 that you would feel the same (i.e. wishing for DCT) if you had a 6MT for a year. We always want what we don't have and we always eventually get bored of what we do have.

P.P.S. If you find an M3 uninvolving on your DD, 6MT or DCT, you aren't driving it hard enough Every day that I drive it to work, I drive it like I'm prepping for the track (in a safe, law abiding way)

Totally agree. I'm a chump and the DCT is a natural fit.

I have a DCT, have driven MT's a ton (but not M's). I tried the "auto" D-mode at first but hated it. Almost always stick shift mine, never got comfortable with the paddles. Really do enjoy the rev-matching sounds. Go with the above posts, find what you like and buy it. I would buy another DCT.

The level of a drivers insistance on the superiority of manual tranmissions tends to be inverserly proportional to their ability to drive one properly.

You are so cool and manly because you drive a 6MT. I was cool too but then went to a DCT and suddenly morphed into a chump. I can tell by your post that you are a "real" driver for sure

Firstly, getting a 1M means getting a 6MT. The change is one in the same. I'm not talking about going to a 6MT M3.

The common understanding is that the DCT performs better on the track. Ferrari's have them as standard now in their designs. The technology is superior for fast shifting.

HOWEVER... I find the daily driving experience a little lacking in involvement for me. As I don't really track, my interest is to just have fun driving my car the way I utilize it on a daily basis. I miss that experience.

This is your signature post in any thread involving MT vs DCT. I agree with your statement as well.

I like to think the shifter is directly proportional to the size of any given M3 drivers manhood. 6MT drivers tend to have proportionate, long and versatile manhood - whereas DCT drivers tend to have slender, slanted and smaller manhoods with less movement.

Guys chill out it was meant as a joke. I know that the DCT is an excellent choice and will be faster than the 6spd, It's like me calling a GTR slow because it does not have a manual trans, IT WAS A JOKE . I figured we have enough of these DCT vs 6spd and 335 vs M3 threads, maybe I should not have added to it but at the end of the day we are all car enthusiast, DCT or 6spd.

I suffered from premature launch control but I out grew it when I was around 19. I just played enough with my shifter until I figured it out

i hate this part of life and it applies to everything. even knowing it happens cant prevent it from occuring. things you love to do become a chore as soon as its your job and you have to do it.
