Rust in battery compartment
Hello,
I have a 2011 BMW M3, upon changing the battery my mechanic noticed quite significant rusting in the battery compartment. Not sure how this happened as there is no signs of water seal leaking. The last battery the previous owner installed was an incorrect lead-acid type, maybe this contributed to the rust, after somehow contaminated with water? Should I get this area sandblasted and the terminals re-done? Does anyone have the part number to the terminal cap part in picture below? Anyone else had this problem?

In this model car it is usually a poor seal around the rear tail light that allows water in and usually from a tail light removal or upgrade. Check out this thread here.
The battery tray 41117178134 is sold separately, though I've never tried to replace one so I'm not sure if it is tack welded in place or if it just snaps into place: If the corroded cable can't be cleaned up, it is part number 61129217031 and it includes the cap: It requires hex nut 07147575162:

Same thing happened to me and I remember finding other people with the same issue. I found about 2 inches of water when replacing the battery shortly after I bought the car but was lucky that there wasn't any rust. Mine cleaned up pretty well with just soap and water. Its been 1 year and I haven't found any new water.
The scary part was seeing the positive battery cable. I have no idea why it was in this state... |
