Weight reduction ??

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I take it there is no "low hanging fruit" when it comes to saving some weight on the e9x M?
I have the MPE which supposedly saves 22 lbs, rarely have more than a half tank of gas (11 mile commute 3-4 days a week).

Guess is there is nothing simple.

Was somewhat surprised to read in the auto raga that the F80 is actually only 50 lbs lighter (after reading earlier BMW claims if 150 lb weight loss)

Interesting that in F1 they can assign a lap time gain to 100 grams of extra weight.

Exhaust, seats, brakes, wheels. Then start replacing body panels with carbon fiber and stripping out insulation.

Was hoping for something less disruptive. In thinking there is not much.

What makes sense w the battery? I had wondered if the battery was special due to the brake energy regen (less drag from alternator).

A set of lightweight wheels saving 6-7 lbs per wheel vs ZCP (such as inexpensive Apex 18 inch with less heavy tires) is probably the best bang for the buck. Not for the absolute weight loss (believe worth ~.1 sec in 1/4 mile according to drag racers), but definitely will improve the handling characteristics. Reducing unsprung and rotating mass will have an equivalence of losing 4-6x sprung weight in terms of handling capabilities.

Battery is also easy (20 lbs), can just replace with the lower weight 80 aH battery for ~20 lbs savings (available at EAS).

Nope. No easy way. E9x M3 no matter what you do will remain a heavy car. Replacing the battery, seats, exhaust, brakes, wheels may net you 100 lb or so. Gutting the interior might offer a few dozen more, but that's it. Look at the GTS. It's totally stripped out yet isn't all that light either

i went with a vorsteiner titanium exhuast and ditched about 35lbs.

i noticed a difference in the weight. hoping to get an oem style challenge race trunk some day. i think the savings with that would be another 15 lbs.

Each time you get in the car, fill the cabin and trunk with helium.

It would take a very experienced driver to notice 20-30lbs.

You noticed 35lb in weight reduction? how?

I noticed the weight difference too when I held the exhaust in my arm (OE vs. Akra ti slip-on), but on the car....it's like 0.98% of the weight taken off.

lol at anyone claiming to feel a difference of 20-30lbs. Its all mental. Kind of like how the car feels smoother after a fresh oil change.

i won't deny it may be mental, but the car seemed to have more of an edge specifically when shifting from 1-2-3. the shifts had a harder kick and the tires seemed to chirp more often and seemingly "easier" than they used to.

regardless, its probably one of the more significant reductions one could make on a car short of going from power/heated seats to racing seats.

You are probably just feeling the "more powerful sound" of the cat back exhaust. You won't feel a 1% weight difference that changed the power to weight ratio by 1/10 of 1%.

Do all the tricks, like the x-pipe and rear exhaust, seats, battery, wheels, and you will feel it. The carbon fiber hood and trunk seem very expensive for the weight loss given how light the stock parts are to start with.

If I were really focused on weight, here's what I'd do:

Akra Evo: ~50 lbs.

AP Racing/Essex BBK: 40 lbs.

BBS/Volk/HRE/Apex wheels: 20-40 lbs.

Performance seats: ~30 lbs.(?)

Challenge CF trunk: 20 lbs.

Lightweight battery: 20 lbs.

That's close to 200 lbs. worth of weight loss, but it would cost a lot. After that, you have to consider drastically altering the character/purpose of the car if you want to cut significant weight.

Surprised nobody mentioned sunroof delete (if applicable) and replacing glass with Lexan which is about 2.5X lighter.

Get a second car if you want a significantly lighter car. It's like trying to get a person with a severe thyroid problem to start losing weight without doing something drastic.

going with the right exhaust, seats, and trunk will easily get you another 100Lbs off the car

the rest starts to get a little trickier

You noticed a 35lb difference on a 3600+ lb car???? Thats less than a 0.01% change buddy, placebo affect perhaps.
