gopro exterior mount

I'm looking to start recording some of my drives and what to set up a gopro for outside the car. Looking for a mount that could work on the rear quarters or trunk and also be able to get most of the car in its fov. But Im not sure how stable this wold be so may not be feasible w/o some bolted mounts? Main thing I want is not record the wind noise so needs to have jack for a mic so I can run something to the rear to capture the exhaust. What setup do you guys use and whats the best position to record from?

Their suction cup mounts work great & are very versatile. Then just run something like a lapel mic with a wind sock to the rear license plate to catch the exhaust.

GoPro 8 if you can swing it, I just got one and it blows my other stuff away.

Buy the RAM brand mounts, best in the business. Learned about them from my friend with a supercharged huracan who regularly runs 6-8 cameras on his car at 200+ mph and has never had one come off. These three pieces should do the trick:

RAM Twist-Lock Composite Suction Cup Base with Ball https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F54LGJK...i_5Dc0Db5VRBCG
Ram Mount Composite Short Double Socket Arm for 1-Inch Ball Bases https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005KWPJ04..._sEc0Db8F1FS6Z
Ram Mount 1-Inch Diameter Ball with Custom GoPro Hero Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G970GX4..._PNc0DbPBGS8TQ

Add the lapel mic with a wind sock over it and you should be good with the wind noise.

I run my cameras on track/autocross in a couple of different configurations. One attached to the sunroof (or you can attach to rear light done if no sunroof) with a longer arm to get the camera lower than the rear view, or on the driver rear window with the shorter arm I linked. Drivers rear quarter panel is good too. Then you run the mic through the back seats to the trunk and tape to your license plate area. I have also run a tow-hook mount and gotten some cool shots from that front and rear with that as well.

Here’s a couple of my videos using a Yi 4K Camera before I got the GoPro. Neither with any sort of external mic.

And recent video with the GoPro 8, night and day quality difference also no mic.

Thanks for the responses. Nice vids kelse92 but I might go cheaper than an 8 because I'm think I want to run one in the cab now as well.

Yeah the 8 was definitely the splurge buy on my part. I was just really sick of the poor quality from the Yi's. I think a 5 or newer GoPro would get the job done and theres plenty of used ones on eBay for cheap, try to get one with extra batteries, my only complaint on the batteries is their life-span in a day

I've done suction cup on the outside, very solid! I also own the BMW tow-hook mount, nice bumper view. I mainly record with the cellphone and Harry's Laptimer now, but have interior go-pro set up as well. So if your phone is new-ish, that records quite well out the windshield with a RAM mount.

Whatever you do to mount it to your car, I do NOT recommend any sort of safety strap.

Saved your ($100-400) GoPro from hitting the ground great but it stinging back and forth from a safety strap can cause way more than $100-400 of paint/body maybe window damage.

Just my 2 cents.
