What rod bearing brands in the market today?

Hello Team,

Im in the process of gathering parts for my E92 S65 rod bearing replacements.

So far, BE Bearings always pop out thru google BMW forums.
I usually used ACL in all of my race cars builds, with zero issues, but saw that BE got it fix for extra 0.0010 clearance.

I can do BE Bearings, but now it is all back order/ out of stock.

Question is, is there any Rod bearings available in the market with like
BE extra 0.0010 over OEM std?

Brief history,

New to BMW with V8 E92, and planning to replace my rod bearing this Thanksgiving week coz I have week off.

10/24/18, I Acquired the 2008 E92 w/ 138,000 miles. ex-owner owner said, bearings was replaced at 40k miles ago, he got service records that he did.

When I got the car, I did oil sample analysis right away thru Black Stone(10/26/18), (waiting for the result ATM, 11/2/2018).

As I have knowledge mechanically and have access to tools and lifts, im doing it anyway coz I like doing it. I built my race cars Evo's and Nissan's in my garage.

THanks

ACL 8B1580HX-STD is 0.025mm/0.001inch increased clearance. Used them myself, so far so happy.
Ps. Very reasonable priced vs competition, while ARP bolts obviously still cost.

Ps.Ps. would be really interesting to see your shells after 40k miles, and what brand.

I did some measuring on the 8B1580H-STD and they were actually tighter than stock. The 8B1580HX-STD will be a little bit to loose. I had ACL make me a compromise set that gets to .0023-.0025" bearing clearance which is what I would prefer on this engine. I got everything in stock and everything measures out. I think this is a good cost effective solution for people who want bearing clearance a bit looser than the factory BMW bearings.

Are the ACL bearings listed in your online store, part# LRD-ACL-S65-ROD, the mixed set you've mentioned below?

Do you stock the "std" or "BE spec" ARP rod bolts?

TIA

Yes that's the correct part number for the mixed set I mentioned that produces the .0025" clearance. We have some of the standard ARP rod bolts in stock but honestly, I always use the stock BMW bolts, they work well and the cost makes sense.

Interesting. The BE guys measure of ACL standard suggested they had more clearance vs OEM (http://wiki.rcollins.org/core/index....s#ACL_Bearings).

Their HX shell is supposed to provide the clearance you ask for, and still they had to mix to get there (mix ST/HX?).

Thx

Using new stock rod bolts, a used crankshaft, three different used rods, and 3 different bearing sets I found the following today:

Genuine BMW Bearings: .0019"
ACL STD: .0018" (a little tight)
ACL HX: .0029" (a little loose)
My Set: .0023"

Please refer to the chart for all your bearings questions and concerns.

According to this chart, the STD series also has more clearance than the OEM bearings but slightly less than BE. While the HX series has slightly more clearance than BE.

Look. Nobody has ever proven exactly how much clearance is the perfect amount. So it's not correct at all to assume that HX series clearance is too much or the STD is too less. Both are amazing bearings. Yes, there is an option out there that we can mix the STD set with HX set to come up with the perfect clearance.

Engine builders do have a recommended clearance, so do bearing manufactures.

BE bearings were specifically designed to meet these recommendations.

WTF is going on today...

The thread DIRECTLY BELOW THIS ONE is entirely about BE bearings vs WPC bearings, not including the search feature which has a wealth of knowledge and previous threads about this...

Am I losing my mind... lol!?!?

That's true, the BE Clevite bearings were designed to produce a looser bearing clearance. But why are people paying more than twice the price for Clevite bearings when the ACL bearings produce the same result?

Both of them result in ~.0025" bearing clearance.
Both are lead/copper.

Is it just better marketing from one company?

That is a good question.

I bought BE because it was the only proven extra clearance product at the time.

Now, I would likely still purchase BE with BE ARP bolts to support the people who spent the time and effort to provide the community with a viable alternative. I know I could save some money but I prefer to support the community members. Just a personal thing.

Cheers,

Clevite has made the best and most respected bearings in the world for the past 40+ years. To my knowledge, nobody has dethroned them. The most successful race teams all seem to use Clevite -- I'm assuming for a reason.

Yes, bearings made in China will cost less...a lot less. On the last batch of 5000 BE shells, 87.4% of all shells measured +/- 0.0001 within nominal. It would be interesting to measure a batch of 5000 shells and see how consistent they are compared to these numbers by Clevite.

It would be interesting to do those measurements.

The ACL bearings say Made in Australia on the box.

You are overly dramatic.

On WPC bearings for over 4 years. The main point is to replace them. And replace them periodically until you are confident the wear interval is ok. Until BE bearing comeback regularly with 100k miles with no wear should you be convinced they will.
